door mirrors

Has anyone fitted the esm door mirrors to their car/van, the ones that bolt through the triangular piece of the quarter light, if so I wonder if they could measure from where they bolt on to the quarter light to the centre of the mirror. I need to know if they would offer a clear view past the rear sides on my van. If not esm stuff, any other suppliers.

Les, you make a valid point there saying a clear veiw to the rear. Recent changes to MoT regs now require mirrors to give an uninterupted veiw to the rear of the vehicle from a normal position without having to make excessive movement from said position so be carefull everyone where you fit them from original.

Hi Les, i have them on a saloon and was going to fit them on my van, but the arms are to short and they are no use on a van. Vans are a serious problem regarding wing-door mirrors with the rear off the van being proud of the cab. The ONLY mirrors i feel are any good are gpo wing mirrors which are superb but not pretty! Also if you dont want to drill your wings like me then i found these are perfect

they are rare but do come up, clamp these on the door frame in front of the quarterlight and you will be happy...

I would concur with the last post as i have these type of mirrors on both sides of my door uprights and find them more than serviceable and with no drilling although there was a post on here some time ago whereby many thought that they presented a "blind spot" however i find them safe and usefull so i geuss its a case of suck it and see

Thanks for your replies, I'm not too keen on the clamping method personally, and agree the gpo mirrors look grim. I think I might have to experiment with some round bar and make some stems, then hopefully attach some decent mirror heads. That way at least I can ensure they are long enough. Being a van I can paint the stems rather than worry about chrome.

I had stand offs on my old van, you can just see them here;[frame]

They worked very well, the bad news is that someone else had them made for the job.

Clamping on method i feel is best, no drill holes, modifying and can be removed and leaves no damage whatsoever. Your idea does sound good though, and like you say if its a working van you can paint them and less chrome to worry about.....

I take your point, will give it some thinking. If I do go the bolt-on way any drilling that is done is in the small triangular piece of the window surround so easily removed and replaced if needed.
