Speedo Cable

I fitted a brand new cable 6000 mls ago. Recently there have been strange noises from the speedo area which I assumed to be cable related. I removed the inner cable and oiled it but the problem returned. I removed the inner cable again and greased it lightly. The noise then got worse! I removed the inner cable, cleaned it with brake cleaner and reoiled it lightly, it then made a noise and the speedo and mileometer have stopped working so I assume the inner cable has broken. I have ordered up another cable. Would you recommend oiling or greasing the new cable before fitting or should i just fit it?

The top 6 inches or so should never be oiled as the oil can make its way into the head.
Did you replace the inner and outer cables?
Is the cable fitted correctly at both ends?
Is the cable run smooth with no sharp bends?
Have you checked the inner cable for damage?
Have you tried a different speedo head in case the problem is not the cable?

Thanks for your speedy reply. I will check the outer cable and speedo head as you suggest and report back.

As above -check for nice smooth run of the cable - and for secure fitting to the gearbox. Are you sure the speedo hasn't failed? Take it out and test run it with an electric drill - running anticlockwise of course.
