Deer,Dogs,Lyme borreliosis and the Rally Field

WhAT IS LYME DISEASE?
Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis, is a bacterial infection
spread by infected ticks. Human infection is uncommon,
because only a small proportion of ticks have the infection.
However, those ticks that may carry Lyme disease are
common in the countryside, especially woodlands and
parks with deer, such as Richmond Park
There shouldent be any real problems at the Centenary rally with it being a deer park
However i should like to make everybody aware of the above for there own information if nothing else
dogs and deer are not a good combination apart from the deer being unsettled by them the bigger problem is Ticks the dogs are more likely to be infested by them thus perhaps transferring them to their human owners putting them at risk of catching Lyme disease from the Ticks-

Remember to check pets for ticks too!
Ticks like our ears, eyes, chin, muzzle,
tail and toes. If you are a regular dog
walker in a Park
consider carrying tweezers or a tick
removal device in your pocket for
rapid removal of the ticks.

failing that I find nail polish remover (acetone) works well on my cats

yes good idea
i use the hot tip of a soldering iron on ticks body they then fall off after ten minutes
but having a hot soldering iron on you aint so handy haha
will try your tip the next time

A good reminder - Lyme disease is a problem that we dog owners do need to be aware of no matter which wooded area we are in. Never tried the soldering iron method!

I was going to bring a groundsheetless old tent but I can't get the thought out of my head now of being covered in ticks in the morning now.

Are there any anti-tick sprays to keep them away?

It is a very small chance in picking up Lyme disease from a tick.

However 3yrs ago I had lyme disease from a tick and it isn't nice. Fortunately our GP recognised it very quickly so I was spared the worst so be careful to extract ticks as soon as you see them and if you feel unwell go see you Doc quickly as if you do have lyme disease you will need some very strong anti biotics.

I quite like my ticks , when they stop , I have to find a spanner to bash the fuel pump !

Tweezers is a definite no as it leaves the head of the tick in the animal to burrow deeper .A visit to the vets and the have a small tool that deals with the tick because it has to be screwed out anti clockwise. You can also get Advantix which stops ticks and fleas in the first place.

I agree with above - I also prefer to keep my "ticks" under the bonnet!
