I'm changing my engine, any other jobs that I should be doing.

Also, is there anything I should be looking at getting (new gaskets/nuts & bolts) that are convenient to renew while the engine is out? I'm going to make an ESM order and hoping to get everything changed in one go.

I'm thinking:

Engine Mount rubbers & bolts
Exhaust manifold gasket

I wouldn't change the engine mounts unless you need to, as the new ones seem to be harder rubber and transmit more noise and vibration through the car than the old ones do. Can't see any reason why the bolts would need changing (if you're referring to the ones that attach the engine mounting turrets to the chassis) unless they're seized / rounded off etc. Those bolts are 1/4 " Whitworth, BTW. Also, the obvious thing to check while the engine is out is the clutch!

Clutch plate and release bearing?

Are you fitting another engine and hoping that it works or has it been stripped and inspected?
And you will need oil and a filter and probably new spark plugs.
All the parts should be laid out on the workbench so that you can see what needs replacing

oil pump and the core plug behind the back plate. make sure bothe are changed properly and they'll not need looking at for the next 30 years.

It's a freshly rebuilt engine, so core plugs and oil pump won't need any attention!

Joe, are you taking the gearbox out to do this, or just lifting the engine up and out? If the box is coming out, it would be worth inspecting the condition of the clutch linkage bushes, and the linkages themselves for that matter.

I know! I was telling everyone to help confine the suggestions to things he'll need.

You need to have wire brushed and squirted some penetrating oil on any exposed threads of bolts you will be wanting to undo.
This mostly applies to ones like the engine towers and hockey sticks that have been exposed to road dirt and salt over the last N years.
WD40 isn't really suitable but is better than nothing

Thanks for the advise. I've been meaning to get some penetrative fluid for bolts for ages - if it works it seems like a worthy investment.

As Chris says, its a reconditioned engine so wont need to do anything to it. I'm not planning on removing without the gearbox as I don't have a hoist :S

The other worthwhile thing to do on reassembly is to put a smear of copper grease on all of the threads. Makes life a lot easier in the future when you come to take it apart again!
