Dashboard with extra dials pictures please

Post by lambrettalad »

I'm in the process of adding the usual three dials plus a clock +radio+heated screen switch etc,I see so many at shows and they do look good :D but I have so many senior moments between thoughts and action I get confused

So, I gather you're looking for photos of people's dashboards with more gauges, then?

Here's mine (keeping in mind I'm in America, so the steering wheel's on the left side):[frame]Image[/frame]

Hi,
I have extra dials too, here's a picture for you..............
[frame]Image[/frame]
......I went for 'Smiths' cream faced dials, as I thought they went with the gold speedo better than the black ones.
I have Amps, Oil pressure and Water temp fitted, which I think is all you really need.
I also inverted the steering wheel, so I could read them whilst driving.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Alex, my dash gauges are standard Smiths ones from that era. They are all black faced, as I thought the black was a nice contrast with the cream dash.

The tachometer is 80mm wide and is RVI 1433/00, which is quite similar to those fitted to Midgets and whatnot (though I've no idea which vehicle this model comes from).

I also have a mechanical oil pressure gauge, mechanical water temperature gauge (which technically was an oil pressure gauge too, but since the Bourdon tube works in any fluid, I simply repainted the word "oil" to "water," and it functions quite well), and ammeter. Each of these is 52mm wide.

Drilling through the glovebox cover was easier than I expected; the exposed face is thin steel and the innards are wood and cloth. But, if you go this route, be careful that the cover is well steady before drilling, as if it's not secured, it'll go flying!

You need one of these. I have one and they are a brilliant piece of kit, worth every penny.

The dials underslung on brackets are by far the neatest way - and without spoiling the original dash in any way.

Exactly - back in the day no-one would ever have considered butchering the dash to fit dials.....so why now?

Not really butchering, the glass fibre panels above use the original mounting holes. They are a lot more visible and look a lot tidier in my opinion.

I don't think it can be classed as butchering - after all you can get a spare glovebox lid and add these dials. Then if you sell/change your mind all you have to do is change the lid for the original one and the car is back to standard.

I think 'butchering' is a bit strong, for myself it is simply a case of swapping one (glove box) insert for another (flat piece of hardboard), which the dials are fixed to. All completely reversible.

It takes greater modification of the dash to mount the hang-down mounts, due to the screw holes that may have to be drilled (when in the past I have gone to mount things under there, I've never found that the existing multitudinous holes are in the right spots).

And as to "why" in the glovebox cover, well, I find they're much more visible if they're right in front of me! Don't have to look as faraway from the road. And I don't bang my knees on something hanging down. And the wiring or pipes are all neatly tucked away, with none of it having to exit the bottom of the dash. I think the aesthetics are better, too. And what use is the behind-steering-wheel glovebox if unmodified (on the earlier cars with the cover)?

But honestly, it's personal choice...everybody do what they want to make their car "their car." I'll just admire you for having a Minor in good condition. 8)

Because it was a spare inst. panel and the instruments look better and are easier to read than when stuck in brackets under the glove box.
