hi to all ,this is my first post. i have been reading on the forums about the "mr grumpys" car roller, its looks a great idea for my resto project. does anyone here on the forms know of any that may be for sale, or even a similar type roller would do the job. thanks in advance for anty replies.

thanks, that is another option if i can find one to borrow. i am also wondering now how much room would be needed to roll the car as my garage is only small. i wonder if anyone might know the dimensions needed, as i dont want to obtain a roller only to find i cant use it ?

You are not going to be able to roll the car with that type of roller - inside a small garage. You would need the type that fixes fore and aft - and spins the car around the centre axis.

If you have got the welder already then how about this?

That's the idea - hardly necessary to buy the 'kit' - just look at the pictures and get hold of some 2" angle iron......

Yes, maybe design to pick up on the shock absorber crossmember bolt holes and/or engine mount holes. Better than the flimsy bumper mounts.....

thanks for all the replies, some good bits of advice here. i think i may well go down the route of making my own after all. with the help of my welder brother hopefully

The ebay one is the sideways roll type - no use for this 'small garage' application.

These are excellent value - but unlike the Mr Grumpy roller it's a shell only spit and not designed to take the weight of an entire car with engine, drive chain etc still installed. So, ok if you are intending a complete rebuild rather than a spot of underside fixing.

I was lucky enough to find one on GumTree for £50 in Liverpool, persuaded the very helpful seller to gaffer tape the parts together and TNT picked it up for £35. But then I had been looking for an affordable one for some time, the ones on Ebay seem to fetch more than the original £250 price. I'm using mine in a 9' wide garage - means rolling a bit (ideally with the help of an engine crane), then sliding a bit, rolling a bit more - then over she goes! Health and Safety executive would have a field day! Best done with a few mates and a crate of beer (for afterwards of course!)
