Where is it now? KWK 461

Post by horologiumwatches »

Hi all,
Just wondering what happened to my 1951 series MM. It popped up on ebay a year or two back, but I wasn't in a possition to buy it back then. Is she still in the lovely original condition she was in when I sold her I wonder?
If anyone knows of her please get in touch. Thanks, Tommy

She's turned up!

Looks pretty much as I had it, although the crazing has got worse and it's gained a few knocks. My nice clean engine bay has suffered a bit too. Still very tempted to have her back though.

I did spot that one on ebay, did it have the lowlight type back bumper fitted when you had it? It was on ebay not so long a ago as well.

Yes I put the back bumper on! I was going to turn her into a lowlight and hope nobody looked at the cchassis number, but it never happened. The original bumper is now painted grey and on the bomb.

Well - That was a bit naughty! Fraudulent, at least. I went to see this car and eBay's idea of distances is a load of old rubbish - 135 miles from my location was more like 200 miles (and them the return trip). I went over this car with a fine tooth-comb and "got dirty" underneath.
Did you replace the door bottoms? What other "work" did you do to this car? Current owner has managed to b*g**r up the speedo, to the extent that it doesn't work right now.

It was only ever going to be for my own enjoyment, not to sell as a lowlight! Anyway..... the only work I did was to replace the nearside sill. All the rest of the car was to my knowledge original. The door bottoms had not been replaced and were very good. One front wing had been replaced at sometime, but was a genuine MM wing. The paint was starting to crack on the roof, not as the owner says because of a bad spray job, but because of heat. The paint was a superb finish, and I had it polished like glass, very flat with hardly any imperfections. The car looks like it hasn't had much done to it since I owned it, but it doesnt look like it's in as nice condition as when I sold it. For the record, I sold it looking better for £2200 (I think) about 5 ish years ago.
Hope this helps.

Tommy,
Thanks for your reply. I now happen to be the proud owner of this car - shame that a "newbie" pushed the price up. I think that I must have been the only "prospective" buyer that went to see it - so many people bid without viewing. There are a lot of things that need doing (apart from the paint job), especially the fact that ALL rubber components have perished! Engine mounts, rear leaf shackle pads, radiator hoses, door draught seals etc. Because of this, I'll be hiring a self-drive Transporter, as I don't think that it will make a journey of 200 miles without incident. I might as well let you know why I was so interested in this car - it was first registered the day after I was born! So... nearly sharing a birthday. When we went on the road test, the engine and gearbox ran "as sweet as a nut" - no rumble, no whine, lovely (and that is when it was a Classified Ad for £3500) :D .
You probably know what I paid for it now - but add about £150 for transporter hire, diesel and additional mileage charges.
I hope to get the paint finish sorted out and the seat seams stitched up again - will post pictures of progress.

for ebay mileage conversions - if you ad 50% to the estimate, it is usually pretty accurate!
I've done this many times and now wonder why the +50% turns out to be close to correct?!?!

Glad to hear it has found a good home. It always was a lovely car. I can find some pictures if you are interested? I would love to see it when you have got it up and running again. The rubber items were all on their way out a few years ago, although I did fit a new windscreen seal.
Hope to stay in touch.

Tommy, I'm collecting it next Tuesday. Pictures will follow, then onto new threads, most likely.

KWK 461 is now safely with me in Farnborough, Hampshire.
Loading up at the seller's place[frame]Image[/frame]
Arrived outside my house (but a neighbour's parked car stopped me from offloading outside my own place) - getting out of cab[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]
In the next shot, you can just see the Polytunnel (behind the 2m Leylandii hedge, that currently houses my Series II Traveller)[frame]Image[/frame]
And, finally, on the drive ...[frame]Image[/frame]
Tommy, among the bits of paperwork handed over to me was a colour photo of a young lad with KWK461 and a written note about the car having been in the family for 16 years - could this be you? I'll scan it in tonight.
Rwegards, George.

Sorry, didn't scan in last night, ran out of time. Have done so now ...[frame]Image[/frame]
Since then, the person that sold it to me, had the plate valued at £1500 (supposedly), but this is only any good if your initials are KWK and the number 461 means something to you. Mine are GTT, so I would have to find an old Devon registration.

Hi George, great to see the old girl is going to be looked after. Yes that's me in the picture just after I bought it. I think I was about 18? The hand written not was nothing to do with me, it was a previous owner and was in the glove box when I bought it. Are the Jaguar Apprenticeship Club stickers still in the side windows? I suspect that may be an interesting bit of history now lost to time.

There are some unusual "target" like stickers - will take photo and post up.

That sounds right, orange and black transfers. One was more visible from the inside and the other from the outside. In the front lower corners of the side windows.
