I came to try and check my tappets lastnight and was unable to turn the engine by hand so i was going to put a socket on the crankshaft pulley to turn it, only thing is my socket set only goes up to 32mm. There wasnt enough room for me to get a proper measurement. Is this the best way to do it or am i doing something wrong?

Leave the plugs in and use starting handle, but make sure that the ignition is turned off!

It's a 1275 and probably hasn't had the starter dog fitted. Use the FAN - just take care not to bend it. And if it slips in the belt - then the belt is not tight enough. Easier to turn the engine anti-clockwise.....

An easy way to check the valve clearances if you cannot use the starter dog is to take out the plugs, put the car into top gear let the handbrake off (make sure that it is on level ground) and pull the car forwards or push backwards until the valve you want to check is in the right position i.e. No 1 valve fully down, check valve clearance of No 8 valve and adjust if necessary, then No 2 down check and adjust No 7 and so on until all are done.
