Hi,
They don't test it, so no. That said it's always a good idea know roughly what speed you are doing................
Big brother is watching us after all........

Try the above link, I've found him to be good in the past.
Best wishes,

Yes, but that's integral to the speedo.
He would be able to sort this out for you.
Alternatively source a spare speedo off ebay and then get your existing one repaired at your leisure / when funds allow. Always good to have a spare, especially as the other thing to go wrong is the integral fuel gauge, which you should get with a speedo.
I have a spare and it has got me out of trouble in the past.

It's not part of the MOT - I also bought a car where there was the same mileage on last 3 MOTs.
Deliberately changing the mileage to make a car seem more valuable is illegal whereas a broken milometer is more of an annoyance.
e.g. How will you be able to work out your mpg (pretty crucial these days !!££!!).
On mine I took the mechanism apart and fixed it (the ratchet arm had been a bit worn so it just needed a bit of bending)

The glass face on the speedometer must not be broken or missing for the MOT......., although I see they have now added some 'exceptions' to that ruling.

And it must be capable of being illuminated. Otherwise the instruction is merely to check the condition... Does that mean check if it is working??? Could be done during the roller brake test. No note in the 'reasons for rejection' to reject the speedo if not working - unless it is 'incomplete or clearly inoperative'...which maybe does mean a check that it is working..... Certainly no requirement to have an odometer. Wonder how it goes with my plastic faced speedo in the TR7 - and many many modern cars...... No glass these days !!
