About a year ago i bought a 1968 morris minor that had a replacement engine fitted. At the time i neglected to ask if the engine had an unleaded head. I have been unable to contact the previous owner as he has moved house.
My question is, is there any way that you can tell whether an engine has an unleaded head ?

Not without taking it off and checking the valve seats.

What are you using the car for? Pottering about or regular high-speed journeys?

The only additive I use is 2-stroke oil mixed to a ratio of 1:100 with the petrol which will do much more good than any quack LRP solution.

NO NEED for an 'unleaded' head - just set valve gaps to 12 thou inlets and 15 thou exhausts - and check/reset every 3000 miles. No need for any additives - although no harm in the 2 stroke oil - I know a lad who swears by it for his Pug diesel...

I wouldn't use a quack LRP additive either.
If you're going to use one, make sure it's one that was proven to work! Some of the ones tested were next to useless.

How many miles will you be doing per year? If you're doing a lot, then you stand more chance of getting a problem (it needs a lot of miles).

Carry on without an additive and if you get no problem, don't worry! If you do get a problem, then you can worry about an unleaded head, but by that time you might have saved up for one.

If you don't like the other options, use an approved additive and don't worry about it.

thanks for the advice guys. i dont do high milage so in the meantime i will stick to the addative i have been using.

You don't need ANY additive....save your money....

If there is a small round sticker on the back of the cylinder head this will confirm that it is unleaded.Bryan

So if I put a small round sticker on the back of the head, will that automatically make it "unleaded" ?

Absolutely!!! Hahahahahaha.......

'Small round sticker' at back of head may be a temperature sensor that could give evidence
of overheating and invalidate a warranty claim.
