Guys - have a pair of Lucas LR6 driving lamps mounted on the front bumper , all has been fine for the last few weeks they give a little more light on full beam - enough to show oncoming motorists that I'm on full beam and you'll need to dip please!.
Me and my son were on the way to squash tonight and everytime full beam was selected within 3 secs the driving lights would go out. Full beam on the headlights is fine - just the driving/spotlights. Everytime without fail , 3 secs on full beam the spotlights go out.
I'm suspecting the relay , and I'll check it the morning but just thought you guys might have other ideas?

sounds like a rather interesting problem.. the first thing I would do if you have a spare relay, is to swap it with the one on the car and see if that makes any difference. failing that take the wire off the relay that goes to your spotlights and hold it on the battering just to see if they fail after three seconds. You could also run the lights like you would normally on full beam and check round the wiring for the spotlights specifically any joins and connectors on the wiring system; giving them a little wiggle to see if this will re-illuminate you're spotlights. If the problem is not within the wiring and is in the spotlight themselves, I would open them up for a close inspection. My immediate diagnosis just from the fact that they're coming on for three seconds and then going off again, is that there is a loose connection somewhere causing resistance leading to it heating up and losing contact when hot.

"spot on" with the poor connection julie4morris - its was a bad earth, since I noticed the drivers headlight was slightly dull in comparison to the passenger side.
