Hey all

I have an odd clonking noise coming from the rear of my moggie, it appears as I go on and off the power. Now I have a rebuilt and balanced propshaft, all new bushes in the rear too. Could this be the diff clonking due to excess clearance?? I also get juddering and the same clonking when going along in a low gear crawling through traffic, its like its kangerooing if you get my meaning> I thought it might be down to a lumpy engine at low revs but it doesn't sound uneven

Hmm I hope not, I have a bill in my paperwork for the car for a recon diff being fitted 10k miles ago!!!

Were rubber or poly bushes used, and how long ago?
Some of the rubber bushes offered nowadays have a poor reputation for disintegrating after 300 miles or so, especially if they have been tightened with the springs off load..

All poly bushed only about 6 months ago

Tried grabbing the prop shaft and drive shafts by hand and twisting for excessive play?

The prop does turn quite a lot when the car is stationary but I'm not sure what is deemed acceptable play when turning the prop??

I was thinking more of worn universal joints? or even loose bolts.?
Looking for the simple first.

The UJ's are new, I had the prop reconditioned a few months ago, I have also checked all the U bolts and other suspension fixings and all seem ok

probably not, but worth checking wheel nuts.

Shock absorber bolts done up tight ?
Engine and gearbox rubber mountings sound / fit for purpose ? Also the engine steady bar working...i.e metal not sheared and serving no useful purpose ?
If they are " shot " then the whole transmission could be shifting about/ flexing too much.
