A nostalgia trip for me. Amazing how few foreign cars, quite a few beetles, how things have changed!

Great to see all those cars that are now classics. I was surprised to notice that there were no pre-war cars. In 1965 I was driving a 1937 Austin Ruby and dad had a 1934 Rover tourer. In England at that time pre-war cars were common. Amazing to see so many Minors, I never noticed them back in 1960s but they must have been very common.

Aye. And nearly all saloons too - the only variance I think is a van near the end - no Travellers!

Travellers in the south were apparently quite scarce as they (I think) had a higher tax rate. So they converted vans into travellers i,e fitting rear seats and cutting out the side panel indents and installing windows . there are still a few around like so today.

Excellent, very interesting. My Dad would have liked to have seen that. Lots of Guards on point duty. I liked the minimal road lining and cyclists wearing normal clothes. The man in the Half-ton cutting through the traffic would have an Astravan today!

The european cars are there although much in the minority - Fiats, Renaults, Citroens, an NSU and a Peugeot, etc. I'm not sure if any of these were assembled there like the Minors and Beetles were. The estates present seemed to be mainly larger ones like A60 Countrymans. Maybe the older cars were more common out of town?

Minors & Beetles were assembled in Ireland? Tell us more please.

Minors were assembled in Dublin from CKD kits at Brittains of Portobello (not far from where I live! ). I believe they were put together there, then trailered a few miles up the road to have the engines put in!

Afaik, the first ever non-German Beetle was assembled in Dublin.

I'm sure someone with more info will be along to expand on my half-remembered factoids.

It would be interesting to know more. Not quite the same place as Portobello but there used to be a Morris Minor restoration place in Ranelagh Road Dublin in the '80s.

I wonder how the Irish Minors priced up against the Irish Beetles back then.
