I've heard differing views. Some say that they make tappet noises louder (more of an echo). Some say they help muffle tappet noises (thicker material to pass through).

I can't say I notice (short of swapping covers for a back-to-back test), but do like the look 8)

Main problem is - no breather connection!! There is definitely NO advantage. Personally - I think they look silly on a Minor.

The alloy rocker cover on the Minor shown above has the breather pipe connection blocked off. Refit the connection put a 'T' piece (available from Halfords) in the existing breather pipe and you have top and bottom breathers then everyone is happy. The emision control system on the MG Metro required it not to have a breather on the alloy rocker cover but that does not mean that you cannot fit one. I agree with bmcecosse 'A' series engines should be allowed to breath well but heavy breathers should not spew oil etc everywhere.

Indeed, my metro one has been modified to take a breather.

Standard MG covers don't have a breather provision - not to say it can't be fitted by drilling/tapping. But really - why? The engine looks great with a nice green polished cover......

I have tried a T piece and rocker breather and found that it dripped less oil as it is. There is a thread on the subject somewhere on the notice board
