Hello, I hope someone can help...a friend of mine is trying to locate the chassis number starting with SMM that is stamped on his lowlight body. The car is very original has been stored for many years and has the original paint under the bonnet. He's looked in the normal places on the bulk head below the regulator box, but with no success. Can anyone suggest where else to look. The car is a mid 1949 built saloon. many thanks Russ.

The chassis number should be on a plate on the top right side of theengine compartment bulkhead or there should be four holes where the plate has been removed. The number should also be stamped on the bulkhead near to the accelerator cable.
Do you have the registration, it might be on my records

Thanks for the reply, he's looked on the bulkhead around the regulator box, coil etc no sign of of a number. Could it possibly be under the coil or regulator box?. Will it just be a number or will it begin with SMM?.
I've read a few of the other threads on the subject and have passed on other possible places where the number could be. I'll ask him what the reg number is. thanks Russ

thanks for the pictures Mike. The chassis number on my friend’s lowlight isn't where it is shown in your picture. My friend has had a search around, he's taken off the regulator box and coil but with no luck yet. There is no sign of any modification to the bulkhead, all spot welds are in place, no welded in plates etc, so it’s a bit of a mystery.
Do you know whether the lowlight chassis number is stamped with the SMM prefix?.
thanks Russ

Isn't it hidden behind the o/s/f shock absorber on MMs?

The link David provided showed an example of that position, but unfortunately it isn’t there either. He has looked on the bulkhead both sides, shock mounts both sides and the floor by the gearbox cover. The problem he has is the chassis plate is missing, removed when it was stored in the 70's.
Anyway thanks for all the suggestions we will keep looking.... regards Russ

If you can find the engine/gearbox/axle numbers then it may be possible to identify the car from Heritage records. You would need at least two numbers in case any components have been changed
