Just gone to change what i thought was simply a dead bulb on the indicator. When i took off the bevel and head it's clear that the seals have rotted and the entire "back end" ie the dual bulb holder has rotted / rusted away, probably due to water damage.

The "chrome" bevel and the external parts all seem good - so i do need a full replacement kit or can i just get the bulb holder part? I've had a quick look on bull motif and i can only see a single bulb holder, nothing with the wee indicator bulb at the bottom.

Also, any ideas on how to clean off what i assume are the two retaining screws so i can actually get a screwdriver into them to undo what is left of the inner unit?

It's common for them to rot. From memory, when I replaced mine I just gave the fixings a good wipe and a squirt of something like plusgas and had no trouble undoing them.

The screws will likely be rotten - good luck getting them out! Dose the new unit with waxoyl as much as possible - and hope it lasts more than a couple of years....

May as well buy two - and renew them both.

To get the screws out you could try getting hold of the head of the screw with a small pair of mole grips after giving it a soak in plusgas, alternativly as it is a self tapper, try drilling the screw out with the same size drill you would use as if you were creating a new hole.

bme - the driver side one is immaculate and shiny - i checked before i ordered!

This is a VERY common fault.
Usually the route cause is a faulty or missing splash protector boot on the back.
The light assembly is in the line of fire from the wheel. when you drive through water everything in the inner wing gets a high pressure jet wash with dirty water.

one the ones i had over the last 10 years the boot was worse than useless and had a gap around the wire exit - this would allow wheel spray in (water / dirt / salty water) and then trap it inside

Make sure you get a good boot with no potential for leaking around the wires - or if it doesn't seal well, use a sealant gun.
