Underseal with added waxoil or Hammerite Chassis Black?

Which is better? Underseal with added waxoil or hammerite Chassis Black. If I do use chassis black, what do I prime with ?

Hi,
I'd say it depends to an extent on what you wish to use it for.
Chassis Black will give you a neater finish if you just want her for shows and maybe the occasional road usage but I don't know how tough it is / how well it would stand up to sustained road use on its own.
I use black waxoil / underbody sealant on mine and keep it refreshed as required but then I use mine everyday.
However all bare metal will need a coat of protective paint first, so if i was starting from scratch, having stripped my underside, I would start with a zinc based primer (link below), followed by chassis black and then, once that had hardened, I would give everywhere a good dose of the black waxoil / underbody sealant, sprayed on rather than painted, an if I had access to an air line I would spray it on using that to make sure it got into all the nooks and crannys.

But this is just my opinion, others on here will have differing ideas, you must weigh them all up and then go with what suits your intended use of the vehicle best.

Thank you very much for your time, Last summer I stripped the underside, two coats of red oxide and then two/ three coats of underseal with added wayoil. I am a bit apprehensive about this stuff as I have heard that it traps moisture in???

I prefer a good coat of anti rust primmer first, then some coats of hammerite smooth... then if you wanted spray a clear coat of waxoil over once the paint has fully hardened.... this is the best protection other then greese and engine oil for a car you use! underseal hides a crazy amount of rust and traps water in, as does schultz if not primmered first and left to harden properly.

my father would use old engine oil on his sidecars and his old austin.
when we were kids,
i had the job of cleaning one of the sidecars for him to sell....
the underside was as good as new

i use gear oil drained from my old landrover on the chassis etc.
as do my landy mates. its thicker and does a great job...
its also free..
we use a large pump up garden type sprayer with a little added paraffin
to thin it down works a treat

For us, Waxoyl mixed with used engine oil, makes Waxoyl go that little bit further per litre (cos it's expensive stuff now) and oil to seep where the Waxoil doesn't/can't. ;) Sprayed liberally..

Yes i would for a car which is going to be used .... will last for years and also as someone above has suggested mixing waxoyl with engine oil is good

Just spray again every 6 months. Should last as long as any fancy cure..

I can report excellent results with POR-15 but this must be applied scrupulously. Many people find Hammerite lacking these days; I still use it for some jobs but only because I've a tin or two left.

Someone said that used engine oil is corrosive so best not to use that for the hollow sections. Used gear oil would be OK as would cheap and nasty fresh engine oil.

Waxoyl isn't even the best on the market now. Dynax S50 or Bilt Hamber I understand is highly rated.

Old engine oil was the method used to prevent rust for many years and does really help (a good example is the mini subframe, front generally survived as it was covered in the oil from its leaky engine. The rear subframe on the other hand had no oil protection and would rust out). HOWEVER pretty sure using old engine oil as a underseal is now considered to be a serious health hazzard as it contains Carcinogenics. This is a 'cut and paste' from an old thread not sure if it is still considered to be a H&S problem to use old engine oil, guessing that the price of everything these days makes people re-assess what is important.

I use Dinitrol ML cavity wax, it's far better at penetration than the Hammerite stuff. Link below.

I also pour old engine oil into all the cavitys / box sections / doors, as it really gets in everywhere , I just keep a bag of sand handy for where it 'escapes'.
Seems to work so far............

It's also good for treating garage doors, sheds and fenceposts.
My Dad used it on our shed when I was growing up, it was still in place the last time I looked, so given there's photo's of it from when my parents moved in during 1953, that's 60 years of preservation. (And I wonder when it was last treated....)
Good stuff!
Surely recycling it is better than just chucking it away at the dump.
Saves my pennies too!!
