hi all i have just mot ed and taxed my 1964 morris minor that has been of the road from 1985 and the mot tester couldn't find the chassis no . if anyone can point me in the right direction thanks kieron

Should be on a stamped plate on the bulkhead inside the engine compartment - on the driver side....

The chassis plate is situated on the driver's side of the engine compartment bulkhead, or thereshould be four screw holes where it has been. The chassis number should also be stamped on the bulkhead near to the accellerator cable.

If it's a 1964 Saloon/Trav/Conv. you should have a STAMPED chassis number (numbers only) - stamped directly into the bodyshell (as Mike has explained), plus an additional "Cowley" plate screwed to the o/s bulkhead which repeats this number, but includes prefixes.

If the chassis plate number doesn't match the log book - you have a problem..... Could suggest a 'ringer'. Is the difference wide - or simply an S read as a 5 - something like that? Did the garage refuse the MOT ?? What is the chassis number from the plate - and from the log book? And what age do you think the car is?

It's a biggish plate about 4" x 3" - hard to miss!

There should be a body number on a small tag on the opposite side of the bulkhead.

As long as you got the MOT!!! I've never been able to find a 'stamped in' number on my 65 Trav.

I've found the stamped-in numbers on both my Minors -- stamped with handheld individual numbers, rather than a rotating stamper, judging by how the numbers are out of alignment with each other. But I have only found these numbers after wholly disassembling the cars, leaving the bulkhead easily "inspectable." I imagine with the loom in the way, it's quite difficult to find them.

is it possible when originally registering the car they may have used the engine number? then the engine has been replaced. I have seen it done on old tractors...

Quite possible. Missouri's vehicle titling system requires a VIN, and my Minor's title has its original engine number there. I don't know if they do the same thing in Britain though.
