Indicators

Hi,
I am returning a Moggy to the road that has been layed up for about 8 years. All is going well accept that the indicators don't work.Being a late 61 model it has no trafficators or specific indicators. It uses the front sides and rear lights. I would be grateful if someone could explain how they should work and any common faults this system is prone to before I jump in with the Multi-Meter. The lights are working fine.

Thank you in advance,

Harvey.

Harvey,

Do the brake lights work both sides? If they do that means that the basic circuit is working, which is good news!

The flashers are controlled by a Lucas DB10 relay (picture below), is it present and connected up? The DB10 relay determines whether the flashers or the foot brake are fed to the rear lights . The unit interrupts the brake light circuit and is known to be unreliable; after laying dormant for a few years it could well have stopped working. The DB10 also feeds the front flasher filaments, but there is no interruption to anything.

The first check is to make sure that you have a supply from the fusebox, with the ignition turned on, to the indicator switch (green wire), and then from the indicator switch to either terminal 4 or 8 on the DB10, depending which side you have selected on the indicator switch.

Next check that you have a supply (another green wire) from the fusebox to the flasher unit (terminal B) and then from terminal L on the flasher unit to terminal 1 on the DB10 unit.

If all the supplies are present, the DB10 is probably at fault. I have never had one, so I don't know whether it is possible to get inside and do anything with it. New ones are expensive, and it is possible to replicate its functions with 4 relays, which will fit inside the emptied DB10 shell and wired up to the DB10 terminals.

The diagram below shows the relays required and the circuit wiring:

The alternative solution is to fit separate indicators

I have found water intrusion, and corroded contacts inside the lights when my lights weren't working.

Thank you for all your help. With all this information I am confident of a positive outcome.
