Ive just put a replacement axle on my van (as mine cracked * last week - photo attached ) I got an axle off a friend who thinks it was from a car or traveller . It had one drum complete but the other end was mostly missing -apart from the backplate - So i was hoping to fit my van drums and brakes etc ......but they look slightly different .
Im about half way with the job -and I thought I better check before going any further

* i was cornering and coming down a hill when this happened - the handbrake flew up and ON . It must have cracked days before - because the bumpstop was gone and there was hardly any oil coming out .

Unless you have been given a Marina axle...... The very early Minor axles were also different....check the PCD - should be 4" or a Minor axle.

Thanks ,I will check tomorrow -if its dry-.........unfortunately this job is taking place outside . ...and Im on hold -waiting for the rest of the bits - bump stops , rubber seats, gaskets etc...
I looked again today and the drum that fits ok is slightly 'coned' or curved - rather than my original drums which are straight .

Maybe a Mini drum has been fitted - but unless a hole has been drilled in it - there won't be any way to adjust the brakes !!

NASTY!!
where in south wales are you. I note your missing one of the U bolts holding the axle to the leaf spring, have you removed it purposely?
But thats a nasty situation to be in, the backplate has rotated 180 degrees hasnt it?
Van and pickups dont have different rear brake drums to any other rear drums on saloon. Infact all vans/pickups use the same running gear (engine/gearbox/suspension) as all moggies with the exception of 8cwt vans which use stronger front swivel pins and thicker leaf springs. The rear drums are actually the same as fitted as fitted to the fronts of 948cc saloon cars which all had 7" drums.

Steve

Thanks again for all the advice on here .........I got everything back together today - new rubbers ,bump stops , locating plates etc...
(it was the one drum that came with the axle that was odd - and ended up confusing me )
once Id got the new axle solid - I was able to fit my original drums.
but - its knowing you are on the right track that counts - and for a while there I was up the creek without a starting handle !
so -Cheers .
ps. Ive now started to assess job- hardness/ duration
by Mugs of tea..........this was definately a 12.
