Hi,
Can somebody tell me the year of the (Bull nosed?) Morris used for March in the new calendar?
I'd like to know because in the third side picture (down from the top) next to the pipe and ash tray is 'my' clock!
That is to say it is exactly the same type of clock that I bought off eBay last year, to fit into my Minor and I'd love to have an idea of exactly how old it is.
I always thought mine was 1930's but I'd love to narrow it down. Mine is a 'Smiths' model, I can't quite see if this one is too but otherwise they seem identical.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Mike.[frame]

I used to have one fitted there on my blue saloon as well, but everytime you opened the glovebox it hit off the clock and marked the paint so I took it out! They would have been fitted to many different cars from the 20s and 30s.

I did an internet search for 'Smiths car clock' and found quite a few of these 8 day 'back winders' (the rim winders are more valuable / desirable, so I am led to believe from what I read) for sale in auction houses. Prices were around the £40 mark on average, which I thought quite fair, as they are a lovely vintage car clock. Date wise they seem to concur with your 20's to 30's estimate, though if someone can be more precise I'd love to know.
Mines in for repair at present, as I can't regulate it's timekeeping. While it's away I will review the fitting of the bracket I made for it, as it does, as you say, act as a 'stop' for the glove box lid. However I do miss it and I can live with the lid issue if necessary, it still opens fully, so the clock will be going back in.
What I found more shocking whilst I was searching for information on these was someone on eBay asking £150 for one!!
Dream on I think..................
Best wishes,
Mike.

Again on my blue minor, I shaped a piece of plywood to fit into the glovebox lid and screwed a fine chain into it and then used one of the original glovebox liner holes to attach it to. Just the place to set your cup on a wet day at a rally field!!!! (excuse the mess in there....)
I did this after I had removed the clock, but it may overcome the issue with the door hitting the clock.[frame]

Interesting. I have a home made foam liner inside the lid at present to help stop any rattles (mines full too by the way but that's what they're for....), however I like your idea and I could always combine the two by adding a layer of foam on top of the wood.....

If you want to know the year of the car (and have its registration) do a check on the DVLA website. All you need is reg and make, and it'll tell you date of first registration amongst other things.

I checked on the DVLA site and the result was:
The vehicle details for RK 2433 are:
Date of Liability 01 02 2013
Date of First Registration 01 11 1928
Year of Manufacture 1928
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1701cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Licence Due to Expire
Vehicle Colour GREEN
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available
So that I think confirms a 20's / 30's date for my clock. Thanks for your help with this.
I've now made a wooden insert for the glove box lid, having made a card template first, trial fit is good. Got a chain from B & Q, just got to put it all together now.

As a post script, I have now installed the wooden insert, foam (for sound deadening - ie: to help stop rattles in the glove box) and chain. I wish I'd done this ages ago, the lid feels solid now rather than tinny, it also shuts better / nicer.
Worth doing whether I had a clock below it or not.
Thanks for the tip David.
Best wishes,
