Fitting Screen

I just had new window rubbers fitted today to my lowlight. I decided to use a professional to refit the glass as I remember the hassle the last time for the screen. In total it took around 21/2 hours (3 of us persuading the screen in) to do the windows - back and sides a doddle, but screen the usual tight fit. It was possibly made worse as I'd got new toughened glass cut and it is 6mm as opposed to 5mm standard. The fitter wasn't going to use any sealant (doesn't use or stock any these days) until I pointed out I'd tried that before, to have a monsoon in the car at first rain shower. I then had to rush down to the local factors to get their last tube of sealant before we started. He put sealant in the window channel and round the outside of the rubber so I'd shouldn't get a leak (fingers crossed).
The front rubber could have had a slightly bigger external lip to the seal - another 5mm would have done, but once the chrome trim was on (had to be stuck on as usual) it looked fine. I left masking tape over the trim until it's stuck.
Price was £120 so wasn't too bad for a mobile service.

What did you use to stick the trim on with?

Just the usual tiger seal equivalent - didn't need much really.

Good to see the screen in place!Well,I still have not managed to fit mine and have succeded in tearing the outer lip again!
Now at desperation time.Just cant get it to fit.
Where did you get your rubber from?
As I say,I have now split two rubber seals.

I bought my seal from bull motif, after an entire weekend And some pretty bruised and pinched thumbs I managed to squeeze mine in but I'm not totally happy with the fit. the rubber along the top doesn't look like its totally sat happy. Where are you based? I'm considering getting a professional to come sort mine out ...as mine still leaks in heavy rain!

I got my seal from Birmingham Morris Minors. As I said earlier, I feel the outer lip is too small, and it's only once the chrome trims are fitted that it looks right. It was a bit of a struggle to fit it, and I was concerned that the new glass may be a fraction too big (could have been 1mm smaller all round for a better fit), but with a professional using his window suckers - essential for pulling glass into seal, it all went in. The centre gap was made wide enough for centre pillar by him using a hard plastic wedge.
I've not even trimmed the excess sealant off yet as I'll leave it all there until the car paintwork gets machine polished.

Suzikimorris,I am in the Romford,Essex area.As we all know, this is probably the worse job on the whole car but as they were fitted in the first place it must be possible to fit without all this hassle!Or not.Can you imagine doing this on a production line!
Looks like ANOTHER rubber is required.
Pete,a question,,,,if I get a windscreen fitter to fit the glass and the seal splits again,by him, then what? Will he be willing to replace the seal?Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I assume the seals are all made by one manufacturer?

A mobile window fitter won't guarantee against breakages etc. I believe there are different manufacturers. Baines? is one of the better known. I had 2 rubbers to choose from - the new one I fitted, plus an older unused Baines one. I discussed what one to fit with the fitter and we chose the new more supple one (no branding marks on it).
The window fitter said that the rubber today isn't like it used to be. I was happy-ish with fit as I've heard many horror stories of late. The last rubbers fitted to this car were by me in 1981

Have a look at the second film in the CKD film thread from 5.21 to 5.38!
Plenty of practice, proper parts and a rubber hammer help a LOT!

Proper parts is the main component - on a production line, if a part doesn't fit, they just grab another.

When I Was tryin to source mine, (about a year an half ago maybe) birmingham wouldn't actually comfortably sell me one saying that I was a pattern Part that didn't fit and needed redesigning, I'd told them that bull motif said they had them and birmingham told me they were all made by the same company and at best I'd seriously struggle to fit it. I am damn stubborn though! Would've bloody listened to them, I hav heard getting glass made 1mm smaller all around makes the job a thousand times easier

and I thought a Birmingham spanner was a hammer
I forgot to mention using socked feet to help push the glass home and support it from inside the car, looked lovely
I will spare you the description
