Both are bad ideas.
That doesn't like like petrol pipe either.

Fitting an inline filter before the pump is not a good idea.
Fitting after the pump is worth doing if:
1) you plan to do a lot of miles in a very dusty environment
2) you may have fine rust coming from the fuel tank
3) you don't know the quality of the petrol.
For the UK, it was a normal Morris Minor modification in the 1970's & 80's
These days fuel is very clean in the UK, however modern cars still have fuel filters..

Listen to MarkyB. That tubing is incorrect and a certain fire hazard.

You must only use the correct metal or re-enforced rubber fuel line. Petrol will disolve many rubbers and plastics and you could be watching all your hard work go up in flames.
The same thing applies to spare fuel cans, you must only use cans which are clearly labelled for petrol

NO filter is best. The SU is very tolerant of dirty, and as mentioned above there is a filter in the base of the pump to catch the worst of what may come through from the tank.

I have run my car with what looks like that type of transparent hose since 1989 and i know it's been there since at least 1978. Is there really a law against that or is it just another myth? The MOT Guys have seen it soooooo many times now!
