Not sure what section this would fall under so I'll stick it here.

I have a fuel tank that is rusty and pinholed in a few places, has anybody any experience of the numerous products out there which claim to repair and seal tanks?

There's one that is used by bikers which is like a resin that you pour in and slosh ,round but it is exspensive, i can't think what its called but it is well rated ,the only thing is you might need 2 or 3 bottles in which case your probabley better off getting another tank off a scrapper .

Some swear by POR 15 - but honestly I would just get a new one......and in fact I did just that with my TR7 at a cost of almost £200 in that case.

Its called Petseal Josh but its realy only a bodge till next time

Also worth noting - the continual changes in petrol ingredients (e.g. increasing allowance of ethanol) have a very bad effect on some of the sealants!

I recently managed to clean out my tank using various lotions and potions including using a hose pipe with the tank upside down on a table in the garden but my tank was sound inside , but that aside one thing that puzzles me with these tank sealers is what effect do they have on the internal filter do they also clog/block this up

Thanks for the replies but a new tank isn't an option: the supply dried up some time ago (it isn't for a Minor).

Looks like it'll be POR-15 but that is quite expensive.

Can you not adapt some other tank to fit? What's it for??

It's for an Allegro, I have two plus one on the car that's been vacuumed by the PO through a non-vented cap. The one isn't bad apart from some heavy pitting and a few pinholes, the other is what a rational person would consider beyond repair.

The 'few pinholes' - will grow in to many pinholes - probably the whole base of the tank will be porous to some degree. This was the situation with my TR7 tank - it had no obvious pinholes - but was 'wet' all over. When I removed it to fit a new one - it had no strength on the base whatsoever.

I'm going to give the resin a go as it is essentially a coating of non-porous plastic.

i would'nt bother with any sealants now as the new addatives in petrol just eat into it.
i had a bike tank which was like that tried the por-15 lasted 2 weeks. try and get it welded
lots of my mates have had it done on bike tanks. google fuel tank repairs
