Reason for Alternative Front Shock Holes

Post by MinorMagic »

Hello All

I know this has probably been asked and answered many times before but what is purpose of the second set of front shock absorber holes. I guess they are probably for a different Morris Model but which one

A member of the Australian Community Forum, OzMorris asked the question and I thought someone in the UK may know the answer

Cheers from Oz

One of those mysteries of Morris Minor design and construction. They can be used for an engine stabiliser bar.
Another one:- Why has the Series MM got two front wheel brake adjusters and one hole in the brake drum and one rear brake adjuster and two holes in the drum?

Hi,
Could it be that a bigger front shock absorber was available or considered, maybe for the US market?
As previously stated though, the spare holes with their captive nuts can make an excellent fixing point for a replacement for your engine stabiliser mounting bracket, once time (rust) has caused the original to snap off. :P
Best wishes,
Mike.

I found the answer to this one after speaking to an ex-cowley employee.

They were included in the design so that a much larger front damper could be fitted for overseas markets that had really bad roads.

In the end they were never used, but I believe that the larger dampers were developed.

So, Mike was definately on the right track! :D

Although we've already got the real answer, how about moving the damper inwards to change the camber angle :o :-?

You would then only have two fixing bolts in alignment. I think that the camber angle change would be too drastic

Just out of interest was this larger shock absorber actually produced / made available?
