I am making up an emergency tool kit and have got everything but in different posts it mentions a 3/16 af... but can't work out what that is used for? Any ideas?

Also, in the morris minor owners book, the car's driving manual published by BMC, it says on page 23 you need 6 spanners of various sizes in AF, but some of them don't seem to have any use when compared with the list on the 'sticky' in the mechanics section, plus nobody mentions taking whitworth as emergency spanners - should you take any whitworth??

you see im planning on using this morris for an everyday car and to go on long distance, around britain, holidays and so need to have everything that i could need to change things that might go on the way... ill have a trailer ha ha

In that post I'm pretty sure he means 3/8" AF - which does have some uses......although right now I can't think what they are on a Minor. Some have that size on the front wheel brake cylinder retainers and later engines have 3/8" AF heads on the screws securing the timing case cover. But neither of these are exactly 'emergency' situations. I carry an old spec case filled with all manner of tiny spanners - AF, Metric and BA. Can usually find one of them fits any situation. There are small heads inside the dizzy......not sure what they are . Whitworth tools are needed for body parts - so carry a few, but not too many.

Whiworth spanners are necessary, not as emergency spanners and should not be used instead of A/F spanners as they will damage the hex and slip.
You should have a set of A/F spanners from 3/8 to 15/16 and Whitworth from 1/4 to 7/16, also a 0BA spanner. Combination spanners are no good by themselves but are useful in aukward spaces, you need two of each nut size, on different spanners

I find combination spanners to be ideal! But as you say - you need two of each. And yes - they would be ideal if there was say 7/16" at one end and 1/2" at the other, then 1/2" and 9/16" on the next and so on. This would really minimise the number! I believe such tools do exist - but I have never found them.......

Open end spanners with different heads are very common - but also very useless. What is needed is the combination ring key - with open at one end and ring at the other - both different sizes. You will be wise to also carry a few sockets - 7/16 1/2 9/16 5/8 and a ratchet drive. Makes that roadside head gasket change slightly easier, although I can assure you it can be done with combination spanners.......

Never buy cheap drop forged stuff, only quality cv tools - I'm still using spanners that came with 1951 Leyland Royal Tiger coaches!

You can never have too many spanners!

Reading some stuff I got through from Moss, it seems they sell King Dick spanners! I'm surprised they're still going, probably only in name! --You remember kingdick don't you Roy? Wonder what he's doing now!

Hahahahaha - I think he had more than one name on here........... And yes - I have a few King Dick spanners in my 'Railway' bag - and a couple of smaller ones in my Minor kit.

Does anyone remember 'Snail Brand' spanners?

Hi Chris, yes I've still got some snail brand double ended ones and 1 single ender for the lathe cross slide.

The small nuts in the dizzy are 4 BA or some tiny size like that.
