Hi i am in the process of re servicing a carb for my van as the old one jammed on the needle jet. In the meantime I put another one (standard)on and then realised that the one Ive had for years isnt the standard carb . Its an SU with breather the damper is nubered auc8114 and the number inside on the main body is AUC845. I cant find that code anywhere - I found au 'd' but not auc845. The lower plastic part of the jet needle assembly is slightly longer than standard and the fitting where the petrol pipe attaches to it, is a push on -(like windscreen pipe fitting). So im just wondering... is it better to rebuild the standard one -or this one , ,that's hopefully, if I discover what it is !

Repair the later one - with the breather connection. But what's wrong with it? Just free off the piston if it's sticking - no abrasives, just cleaning and 'perhaps' a wee spot of Brasso .......

.Thanks,.........is the AUC 845 just a later type carburretor which was fitted to a 1970 van then
- as I couldnt find any reference to that number on the SU site . My first plan was to renovate it - but I couldnt find the right service kit for it -because i wasnt sure of the model .

Is there a triangular tag on one of the float chamber screws?
I think the carb model will be on it.

I doubt it needs a 'kit' - just clean it all up!

Which shows it's an HS2 carb (we knew that already!) and a new one will be £198.78 thank you very much!!

If it drips then it needs a service kit, if not then save yourself nearly £50. The kit will be the same for all HS2s, just check the needle size

Yes, on the outside only. The piston and dashpot internal diameter must never be polished ever!! Cleaned very carefully with a non-acid degreaser only.

If the internal cleaning doesn't do the job - a little brasso IS permissible on the bell walls... But certainly NOT anything like wet/dry paper/grinding paste !! Sometimes just turning the bell 180 degrees make a difference - sometimes it makes it worse...... What is worth checking is the footing where the bell sits down - if there is any grit or dirt there, the bell could be slightly tilted causing binding. So do the cleaning first!
