Ignition barrel and key

Apologies if this has been asked before. I have no keys for my Morris minor - they were lost (or hidden) during a house move/divorce at the beginning of the restoration 5 years ago (yes 5 :( ). The ignition barrel has a 6 digit serial number stamped on it (5 numbers and 1 letter) plus, presumably the date of manufacture - 1 67 which would tie in with the build date of the car.

Is it possible to work out the key number from the lock barrel serial number? If not I will try to find a key to fit it at the NEC car show tomorrow. Is it likely to be FS series?

Thanks

Try contacting the BMIHT, they should have the key number on the car records. You will need the chassis number

I would give Chris or Yvonne a ring at Tom Roy MM specialists they keep keys on the shelf.

Thanks all - I took the ignition barrel to a locksmith at the NEC on Saturday. We found the key number fom the internal mechanism and after replacing a faulty/worn tumbler, it all works great!

However, i was surprised to find that the ignition key does not fit the doors and bootlid so will now need to try and find keys for those. :o

The locks may have been changed at some point.

Did you know ESM do matched key and barrel sets? (Up to £50 though)

I may get to that but would prefer to try and find original numbers first. Is there a way to easily identify the door lock numbers or is it yet more dismantling?

Usually the old locks are so worn that just about anything will turn them........certainly the case with my Trav! :(

As I said earlier, BMIHT will hold the records of the original key numbers.

Thanks Mike, I got the numbers from BMIHT. And, by pure coincidence the key number is the same for the alternative bootlid I had to buy - result!
