Hi folks.
Any reason why I can't run two 6volt horns wired in series off a 12volt supply?
Or is that simplyfying it too much. :-? About to give it a go and don't want to damage two rare horns....

Just give em 12 volts - twice as loud! And for the half second of sounding - hardly going to overheat/burn out.

I have a Lucas 6V horn, I think that I tried Roy's method before I spotted the 6V, don't think it works any more! I will test it with my railway transformer with the dial turned down.
Much better to use a pair of Windtones in parallel

The series connection will work well..but all this for a horn. Mine only gets used once a year - at the MOT !

After my Mog's original horns failed, I went and scavenged some AC Delco horns from a '47 Chevrolet Stylemaster rotting in a scrapyard -- believe it or not, the horns still work after probably thirty years of the car sitting in this field, and boy are they ever loud and clear! 8) And they only cost me $5.

What I mean is, if you're in need of horns, there are plenty laying around, itching to be used. I know that wasn't quite what you asked, but I thought, for what it's worth...

And those Chevy horns would be 6 volts, too.

Thanks for the replies. Will try the series wiring and see what happens....
Its a pair of chrome windtones with trumpets that look quite flashy. Original to the car (not a Minor I hasten to add) and it'd be nice to keep them if possible, even though the car will now be on 12v...
If all fails we'll have to find some other suitable lookign horn.

hi all,
Tried them in series and they worked fine! Very melodious :) (I was wary because like Mike Perry, I'd tried an old horn on 12v without realising it was a6v one and that never worked again....)
Anyway all sorted. Just the rest of the electrics to suss out now, but the horns look a treat :D[frame]Image[/frame]

A Hudson indeed! V. nice. :) Is it a Terraplane RHD or early 1930s model?

Or even a 'special' looking at the rest of what I can see?

Ok here goes! Its a 1935 Railton with bodywork by The Carlton Carraige Company. Its not mine, but is owned by a friend who I share a garage unit with. I've been involved in the metalwork repairs and now the electrics...
Well spotted re the Hudson engine, Railtons were built on Hudson chassis and running gear and bodied by various coachbuilders. (My own saloon is Carbodies of Coventry).
First pic shows a trial fit of the restored wings so you can get an idea of its lones and how it looks. Second pic is how it came as it was wheeled out of its barn where it had been for 40+ years after the previous owner rescued it out of a scrapyard.
Its now at the paint, trim and wiring stage...
For Morris Minor content, (other than the voltage regulator!)if you look closely in the first pic, theres a Series2 saloon in the background!
