Hi Guys/Gals,
I need some help with my windscreen wipers PLEASE.
I have a 1955 series 2 and the drivers wiper fails to operate correctly, but the passenger side works just fine. If I lift the arm away from the screen they both work ok, apart from if I hold the drivers side arm firmly it stops moving. I does want to move but fails with just a small amount of resistance.
Grateful thanks
Bob

Re: Wipers
Hi.
Sounds like a worn wiper wheelbox.
After many years of window wiping the little gear wheel on the end of the wiper spindle gets very worn. The cure is the remove the wiper assembly and fit a new wheelbox spindle with gearwheel. Or, what you can do is remove the rack and rotate the gear wheel around so that the unworn portion of the gear wheel is in contact with the rack,(It will only have worn on one side hopefully) instead of the worn section.
Probably a good idea to remove the whole assembly from the car complete with motor to do this as there is a nylon bush on the end pf the rack by the wiper motor which tends to snap if you try to bend it and this will cause you problems.
Cheers

Re: Wipers
Check first if the wiper arm is just skidding on the splined shaft of the wheelbox. Is this the same car and wiper problem that has already been fully answered in another place ?

Re: Wipers
Yes it has.
Do check it is not just loose on the splined shaft - the screw adjuster system is a definite improvement..

Re: Wipers
I was the last series 2 wiper guy, but my problem was the other way round. The motor had come away from the rubber mounts on the bracket on mine and was just flapping around in its housing with the n/s wiper not working. I replaced the bracket and greased everything up so the rack ran smoothly through the sleeve and the spindle boxes. I think the secret was to get the rack as straight as possible otherwise the cable with the wire surround flexes and creates resistance in the sleeve, making one or the other wiper non-compliant.
The wipers on mine are held on to the spindle with a nut that tightens around it. If you have the same arrangement you need to make sure this is tight as it could save you a lot of fiddling if it is loose enough to prevent the wiper from moving when it is pressed against the screen.

Many thanks Guys!
I am sure that with all your suggestions I will be able to fix the problem, when I can get round to working on them.
