I've just bought a nice bit of ex-mod kit (Hawker Siddeley Checkweight), but its quite old and the rubber dust seal has perished.

its this O-----O profile, the Os fit in grooves and are about 6mm dia, its about 34mm wide, but could be wider.

Any suggestions where I could buy something similar? (woolies trim have something similar, but the Os are too small...

Is the extrusion RM21 on http://www.vintagecarparts.co.uk what you are after ? It's an 11mm bead and 38 mm overall according to their website.

With stuff I have thats up to 1000kg (legally) on a single wheel

mogbob, I need a bead at each end, that appears to only have a bead at 1 end

Why not just fit two O rings in the grooves - I can't see the bit in the middle really matters - or does it?

yeah... its what stops the rubbish get in the mechanism BMC!

Its that shape because the top plate moves in relation to the base when a vehicle drives on it

Hmm -well obviously I don't know the machine - but I would hope the two O rings would keep the crap out? We weigh our locos by jacking up each wheel in turn just 'slightly' clear of the rail with a hydraulic pump and ram - and measure the pressure to do that - working out the weight from the area of the ram piston... And then we adjust the springs to get equal wheel weights.

The "O rings" just go in to a groove in the top and bottom plate.



The vehicle drives on to the top plate, this has a degree of movement in all directions. The O ring grooves are on the side, hence the request from a piece of rubber extrusion rather than O ring material, as the flat part acts as the dust seal...

Its also much easier to drive on to it, record weight, then drive off rather than jacking up (potentially) 8 times (vehicle + twin axle trailer)

Let me confess my complete ignorance of the machinery involved at the outset.To me, it looks like a specialist piece of of kit...no doubt with a specialist price to go with it...if you can obtain a replacement.

Lateral thinking.... could you glue the flat surfaces of two normal extrusions together( with the " O " rings at either end ) or would two thicknesses of flat rubber not be flexible enough ?

If not , how about excess " flat" rubber removed and only glueing tabs left at regular intervals,fix it to the other untouched strip ?

I have found a few bits of extrusion that are the right shape, but not necessarily the right dimensions.

Its not that specialist, at the end of the day its just a pair of scales, but scales that go up to 3500kg

Try COH Baines, in Tunbridge, Kent. They make all the extrusions and many more that the classic car folk sell. They have a huge catalogue of sizes and profiles.
