I am re-assembling oil filter assembly and although the spring is inside the bowl, there is no large washer on the shaft to put pressure on the filter which means the filter has just been idling away at the bottom of the filter can. As this is relatively low-tech, I assume any reasonable washer that has a larger diameter than the hole in the fillter will do? Any comments, as always, appreciated.

Can't see why not short term, only thing is the filter may not 'sit' as it does with the conventional base plate.
Long term, put a wanted add on the forum, plenty of people must have em spare from converting to spin on filters etc..

It needs the large flat plate that completely covers the base of the paper filter - not just a small washer to cover the hole... Get the correct parts.....This is THE most common cause of engine demise on the A series. See here - items 102/3/4 http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewP ... exID=17078

You might as well convert to a canister filter - end of problem.

100% agreement ,so much easier .I've kept all the old bits and pieces ,in case when sold the new owner may want to revert

I Agree with mike definatly change to a canister filter.

I don't see the need to change to the can - absolutely nothing wrong with the original system, filters are inexpensive and easily changed. BUT ALL the parts must be there! If changing to the can saves the engine - well yes, do it!

Thanks for the input. Just to close this off, I bit the bullet and bought the necessary spares (it's just the P&P that crucifies you). As I have 2x the old filter, this was the cheapest way forward.

The side valve engine has a circlip to hold the base plate and spring in position, why could they not do that with the A Series?

Agree 100% with BMC, here a link and diagram if you look up oil filter, your filter type should be the left hand picture (I think)
