I am seriously looking at buying a 1972 Traveller but having great difficulty in finding out exactly how I go about applying for tax excemption. (I do believe that this car qualify's) Could someone please advise me in words of one syllable what needs to be done. Thanks in anticipation. Peter.

to quote the DVLA " Vehicles made before 1 January 1973 ( Historic vehicles ) don't pay vehicle tax ".

Is the vehicle registered with the DVLA or is it a recent import ? Is it your vehicle / what paperwork do you have in your possesion to prove ownership ?

If the vehicle class is 'Historic' on the V5c - there is no tax to pay..... If it's not 'historic' you need to visit a DVLA local office to sort it out. Simples !!

As yet I do not have any documents but will obviously get possesion once I purchase the vehicle. So, if the vehicle is deemed to be historic do I do nothing? or do I have to apply for documentation to show the police in the event of being stopped for any reason.

The guy in our local post office doesn't seem to be able to understand the Historic Vehicle tax exemption and every year he has a puzzled look on his face and asks to see my disability badge or something similar

I just took my V5 and insurance details up the post office, and the pretty little thing behind the counter gave me a tax disc. As above, if it says historic, although the more dense of her majesty's mail carriers might have to look it up, they should just issue you a nice shiny tax disc. This years are a nice purple hue, that really clash with my paintwork.

As Roy has said if the V5 says historic, apart from registering yourself as the new owner, there is no action to take.Await the usual reminder from the DVLA and apply ( by whichever method you find most convenient ).If the MOT is current and you have valid insurance for the car you can even do it online.

The car must be insured and have an MOT - and then you apply for a tax disc in the usual manner - except you don't pay anything! You could still be prosecuted for not having the car taxed and for not displaying a current tax disc if you don't get and display the new disc........

thanks for all of your help you have certainly cleared up some worrying questions that I had. It is much appreciated. This is my first day as member of MMOC and I hope (when I take delivery) of my 1972 Traveller to see a few of you at some of the rally's.

Do not send off original docs to DVLA, you will lose them. Always send photocopies.
It is unlikely that your Traveller is 1972 as the last Traveller was built in April 1971

But may not have been registered until 1972.

Vehicle is advertised as '72 but will bow down who those who know better. Going to view the vehicle tomorrow so will have chance to see the documents.

The vehicle is probably advertised correctly for a registration date of 1972..

To allow the 'Historic' vehicle category to work correctly (e.g. to cover imported vehicles etc..) it was based on manufacture date, not registration date.
e.g. a car imported from overseas could be registered in 2012 in UK, but originally build 1972, then the tax class still applies.

If your car has been taxed in recent years, you won't have to do much apart from make sure the V5C is updated with new keeper details. As already stated, the rules about getting a tax disc (MOT+Insurance) and needing to have a tax disc still apply - just that the fee is £0.

If your car has not been taxed since the last change of name of the category was put in place (i.e. the V5C shows anything different in the tax class) then you will need your MOT, Insurance & V5C and make a visit to a DVLA local office to get it sorted same day (or apply for tax category change by post, taking maybe a few weeks).
As your car was registered in 1972, this will be simple.

For cars that have disappeared from DVLA records or registered from 73 onwards, but built before 1973, the owner needs an extra handful of paperwork endorsed by an approved classic car club before DVLA can process the application for'Historic' tax category.
