Morris minor - what to look for and more...

Hi all,

I am still very much interested in buying and potentially owning a morris minor. I have liked them for many years and the think the styling and overall quality adds character that you don't see anymore.

I'm not completely new to classic cars and the work that can be involved.

Having read the buyers guide here and elsewhere I would like other's views and advice and oppinions on where to look, what to look out for and what determines a good from a bad minor.

what sort of budget should I have prior to buying a potential moggie?

(I'm not made of money so to give an outline:

It certainly doesn't have to be a show winner by any means, tired flat paint, perhaps small area's of bubbling on the base of the doors, maybe a few small dents... perhaps a "lived in" interior but still very much functional. Structurally solid and mechanically in good condition. what budget should I have to a minor in the above condition?

I walk to work and therefore it won't be used everyday and won't be depending on the car starting everyday. but should the need arise where I could be using everyday and potentially doing between 6k-8k miles per year. what work could be required to keep the minor mobile and in a good mechanical condition?

Sorry for the million questions. one other favor? when I am in a position to go and view a minor with a view to purchase, would someone nearby mind coming with an expert view?

Thanks in advance

rob :)

You ask for 'mechanically good' but this the easiest/least expensive part to put right - so as long as the price is right - don't worry too much. Structurally sound is indeed what matters- so this is what to look for. And a brand new MOT is essential. You really MUST keep the car indoors - or at least under a carport - a car cover is hopeless.......

mechanically good - to expand I understand what you mean. so long as the engine and gearbox is in good condition and can be run daily (given the odd niggle)..

would keeping the car outside, everyday in all weather's be a problem? I have no garage with no access and no carport and can't put one on either.

We keep our three Minors outside and use them every day. No problem. You should look for a car with a sound structure. Mechanical bits are simple to work with on a Minor.

My moggy is out in all weathers and has been for 3 years. Just use turtle wax regularly. Covers are a waste of time and cars can also sweat in garages, And im in wales so weather is as most people no is poor.most of the time.
