Compressor Question

Now, before I run out and buy the compressor I've been considering - can anyone give me any advice on what I should look at when buying one?

Biggest CFM you can afford and a big tank.

Okay, but could someone remind me what a reasonable CFM value is, and size of tank? I lost (read: recycled in an urge to keep the place tidy) my Practical Classics with the compressor reviews...

8 CFM and about a 50 litre tank. 8 bar pressure too.

Poot, they've sold out and won't have any until next week anyway (nor can they give me specs for the thing because they want to check what the ones that come in say, in case they've changed them.)....

8 is a good start but go for 20CFM if u are loaded ;-)
Less than 8 and you struggle to find a decent spray gun - many proffesional air tools specify 20 (from memory)

Hello Kate\Ray,
I don't think you can get a 20CFM compressor that is not three phase powered and so will not work with a domestic supply.
If the compressor is marginal in delivery, then it means waiting for the pressure to build up, in other words, you need to spray then wait. Try and stop spraying at a narrow section area as this minimises the overspray when resuming.

ah! that would explain why it is only places like industrial units that and repair shops that go fo those onesI don't think you can get a 20CFM compressor that is not three phase
- However those 20CFM tools do seem pretty cool

Machine Mart do a 16 cfm one with a 100l tank, but you'll need a 30a (single phase) supply to run it. It was PC's best buy - they reckoned it ran most air tools fine, and I'll second that. Reader, I bought one, and it's great.

19 cfm is avalible on 240v single phase.
call shiremoor compressors on 0191 2377177 and get there catalogue.
very intersting good prices, thay can fit a pressure relief valve to help protect your fuse's on startup. they sell good welding machines too!
