hi

is it possible to just replace the two cant rails (long straight pieces under the gutter) on a traveller, without going to the extent of a full roof off job ?

i presume the four curved roof bars rest on these and they are fixed front and back ? i cant tell quite what is involved from all the articles ive seen.

the rest of her timber is in great condition really for her age

cheers

The answer must be yes as my local Minor specialist advised that it's possible to replace one whole side as long as the roof is properly shored up.

From my extremely limited knowledge (never done it but read a pretty thin book on it) it may not be an easy job!
The cant rail is nailed to the roof strengtheners ans the roof is then nailed to the wood around the edges. Unless you've done one before I would be nervous that wresting all the nailed areas apart would damage the roof

I would also be a little wary, why not give Chris`s local specialist at Chertsey a call they are Traveller specialists and very helpful.

thanks

i thought it might be difficult, it probably is easier to replace the whole side but the rest of the timber is very solid. i presume the roof has got to come off really. ah well, i'll look into it, its not an immediate neccesity anyway.

thanks for the recommendations for an expert, i would prefer to do it myself as money is very tight, but i dont want to make a mess of it

cheers

I thought you would but suggested Chertsey as they will give advice over the phone where possible, or you could email them.
