Oil pumps and throwers questions

Very sorry about this everyone but more midget 1275 engine rebuild questions, now moved onto putting things back together that I did not take apart so feeling more vulnerable that ever. First question, does the midget 1275 have an oil thrower fitted to the front of the crankshaft within the timing chain cover, I ask because the book (yes I know BMC but its all I have) says fit the oil thrower, when I picked the engine up the timing cover was missing and there was not one in place, also the parts dogalog I have for a 1275 does not list or show one.
Second Q is The oil pump I removed has 4 retaining bolts, the new ones listed for 1275's only have 2 retaining bolts, have I missed somthing here?

Item 6 for the thrower - MOSS have the best parts diagrams....... I hope you have the 'steel backed' pump...... Any spare holes should probably be plugged - just in case.

Once again thank you BMC, will order myself an oil thrower, will need to check my oil pump, have purchased a new one that only has 2 bolts rather than 4, blurb says it is for a midget 1275 but the one I took off has 4 bolts. I have recently purchased a set of lock tabs (main bearing bolts) from sussex classic car parts that were too wide, when fitted they were catching the crank, their parts diagram was not showing oil thrower.

Nor should it show lock tabs for a 1275 engine! Don't fit them!!
This is the 'steel backed' oil pump http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini- ... 1e6633a592 I assume it is a 'slot drive' cam in the engine?

Yep thats the one I have, so is it OK to fit with just the two retaining bolts rather than the original four?

If you were to remove the two screws - would the other two bolts it the block - I appreciate you will need to run a drill through the threaded holes - but is the pitch correct? Check with the gasket !!

Don,t think that will work BMC, however, found the old oil pump from the engine currently in car, It had two bolts with it so I think it was replaced with a two bolt pump without problems.[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

Crikey! A spider drive pump!! Hope you have the spider - don't lose it. They are like hen's teeth now. I see what you mean - they have elongated the ports over the the hole locations..... I would probe the unused holes in the block to make sure they are blind - and not open to the crankcase. I think I would still block them off..............

The Moss site is showing locking tabs (no.12) for main bolts, but does state early only.

Yes - I know - but I have never seen them on a 1275 engine - Mini or Marina. Degrease and use Loctite. Your engine must be very early to have a spider camshaft!

Agree with BMC about the spider drive - my 1275 engine has this and it is very hard to find the spider if you lose it. Also my estimated '71 1275 did not have locktabs! Good luck

I must have two very early midget engines as both have spider drive oil pumps, not sure if the one fitted has main lock tabs tho, it did have the two sets of lock tabs rather than four spring washers on the oil pump (possibly even earlier that the one currently rebuilding). How have you estimated 1971 for yours, both of my engines have lost their number/ref plates so only have internals to work with.

The car it came out of was a 'K' plate car registered in April '71 :D
