*Before anyone says i have searched through the forum and i can't find any clear guides/info on this subject *
I'm interested in moving on from the A series, mainly because of my seemingly bad luck with them
I have a friend with several 110/1300 cross flows which i can have further to this he also has a type 9 box to put into the sale as well!
My main question is this though: Has anyone/or does anyone know anyone that has put a crossflow into a minor, how hard was it? Were there any massive problems?
I'm really interested in getting my traveller upgraded! Thanks!
Yes. do a search on here. mostly people have fitted the 1600 crossflows Insurance on a non a series could be an issue though grant. Jlh have some nice pics on here from a few years ago of a tuned 1600, looking sweet!
As much as i would love that i'm 19 and i don't fancy selling a kidney just to pay for the insurance... and then have to rob a bank just to buy the engine and box.... Hence why i asked about the crossflow.... small and hopefully just as cheap to insure!
There have been plenty crossflows fitted to minors - quite straightforward engineering really - just fabbed engine and gearbox mounts and modified prop really.
Exhaust may need a bit of tweaking to get right, but shouldn't take too long.
However, I don't really see much advantage with an 1100 or 1300 over a 1275 A series, but fitting a 1600 moves things on a bit. Insurance shouldn't be too bad as you aren't cutting any bodywork.
Well people seem to be charging horrendous amounts for the 1275 a series engines... i have yet to see one that is within the price range of getting a basically brand new 1100 crossflow + gearbox
Consider also tweaking what you have.
Get the "Bible" Tuning the A series by David Vizard and see what can be done.
A lot of it costs more in time than it does in money, and nobody except you need ever know

I would agree with the above comments regarding the size of the xflow, a 1300 offers little gain over a 1275 a series. I am fitting a 1600 into mine an havn't come up against any fitting issues apart from said exhaust tweeking. Insurance wise, mine will hardly change (i'm only 24) as I will be upgarading the brakes and general safety of the car. Have you spoken to your insurer regarding the planned changes as it might be case that if you are upgrading other parts for safety you insurance won't change or only slightly increase.
To give you an idea of bhp ( if your interested) I have a 1600 with a +80 bore, a single hs6 carb and decent exhaust manifold and that is giving me around 115.
On the note of the tuning bible... i have just ordered one haha. Well my mate has a mk1 escort which had a 1300 in which seemed alright, but now he has obtained some re-built and not used 1100's, one of which is in his car now, and they go like stink! His car now goes faster than before, with the 1300 :O. That was the only real reason, as well as the price of either 1600 crossflow or the 1275 a series.

I will just try and tune/rebuild or whatever it takes to get my own current engine to pull me a long
Hi mate. Im in the same boat, I will be putting a 1600 xfow in my pickup, but carn`t find any pic`s etc. I`ve been onto JLH (nice peaple ) they have a type 9 gearbox cross member but no engine mounts. just wondered if anyone know`s if anyone does them?
Heres a few shots. Standard block with a few tweaks, standard four speed box with modified mounts and I think the only gearbox mod was cutting to avoid steering rack. Had to make up some manifold extension plates to make it all fit exhaust wise. Looked quite smart and meant wasnt chopping up the OEM item which having previously done failed numerous times!

That is beautiful... this is what i want, like a lot . I think this is the better value than the ZETEC thing that everyone seems to go for. Was it pretty quick with that 1600 in?
It was a good little conversion, but with so many conversions the exhaust was the achilies heel, kept blowing!!
The truck was a tad on the heavy side being made up of a ladder chassis on the back (On top of the two door floor pan which the ute was based around!) so maybe not the best platform for perfomance.
I'd go down the turbo'd a series route. Just as easy to and keeps the cars roots. Turbo block etcs if you can find ones a few hundred along with the ford 5 speed box is a cood combo......What my two door saloons running!
Well if you are planning on keeping Minors long-term then going to the extra work of the 1100 crossflow means an easy change to 1600 later on if you want. Or another, modern Ford engine with a bit of work.
