I've recently discovered that our Traveller was supplied, from the factory, to Shipside's of Loughborough on the 15 August 1968, was wondering if anyone could supply me with any details of the company, which I suppose has gone, as many have.

I understand that the Shipside family also had a connections in Nottingham and may have established Tollerton aerodrome.

Many thanks for reading this

Tom Shipside opened his Morris dealership in 1913 in Nottingham - I'm not sure when the Loughborough branch opened but my father worked there in the early 50s. I have a 1953 saloon that was supplied by T. Shipside in Nottingham.

T. Shipside did build Tollerton Airfield in 1928.

Many thanks for your reply, Rog, a bit more information on the history of our Traveller, which was delivered to Loughborough on the 15 August 1968 and was registered on the 21, so didn't stay long, suppose it was supplied to order.

They used to operate from a garage in the CONNERIES in Loughborough LE111DZ and it is now occupied by Greypaul who sell Italian sports cars. They were a retail and wholesale business and many local garages who were Morris agents sourced their cars through them as wholesalers. Just because your car went there does not mean it was sold by them to the end user. We had a Traveller from them in 1960 and several vans and pick ups in the later sixties. They sold the premises in the early eighties.

According to the 1960 edition of the BMC gazeteer of distributors and dealers, Shipsides were reciprocal retail dealers (whatever that means) for Austin, Distributors for Morris, retail dealers for Wolseley and MG, and retail dealers for Morris light and Heavey commercial vehicles :-)
