Oil pressure warning light

Hi chaps,

whilst testing to see if my rerouting of the speedo cable had any effect I had the oil pressure warning light come on on my 1275cc Ital engine. I immediately switched off the engine, opened the bonnet and checked the oil level on the dip stick. The oil level was at the MIN mark and after adding about a litre of oil the oil pressure light has gone out.

My question is this, would the oil level being this low be enough to cause the oil pressure to drop to the level at which the light would come on? I'm hoping that no damage has been done to the engine, but as the ignition was switched off as soon as I noticed the light come on I doubt that much, if any has been caused.

Regards

John

Even at MIN there is plenty of cover for the pick-up (when standing - NOT when hard cornering...) . You added cold oil which would raise the pressure nicely.......until it heated up. Fit a gauge - the light is a poor substitute.

The distance between min and max on the dipstick is 1 pint, a litre is too much.
Silly question - Have you got the warning lights in the correct positions?
Sensors can give false readings, I have changed one that came on at 20psi and eventually stayed on

I agree that the oil pressure warning light is a poor substitute for a pressure gauge. The gauge is the next thing on the list.
The light went out after adding the oil and stayed out afterwards. I'm hoping the light coming on was a "false positive" as it hasn't happened again. I'd only gone about 500 yards when the light came on and switched the ignition off immediately.

Mike, I checked the dashboard warning lights whilst trying to sort out the main beam indicator light. The speedo was taken out, with a view to changing it for a 1280tpm speedo, which didn't happen as the 1280 speedo was knackered. I checked the lights with the ignition on and replaced them in their corresponding holes in the speedo.

I'll check the oil level again today and see what the level is like.
