Rag top noise

Took my 15 year old daughter out for a run yesterday, left the lid on as rather windy and looked like it may rain for a change! Doing about 30 and my daughter says is it normally this noisy, seeemed the norm to me but in fact she was right, guess I have just got used to it and rarely have anyone in the car with me. The truth is that it is very noisy, the hood slaps against the frame, the faster you go the louder it becomes, doing 60 MPH (flat out) on the M4 would almost certainly require ear protectors if the H&S police were involved. So the question is for rag top owners, is this the norm, what is yours like at high speeds, windy weather etc. I may just have a really poorly fitted hood as I do not remember it being this bad when it had the original one that had a few holes in it.

Welshrat,
This is what I did to prevent the hood flapping. Split pipe insulation from the DIY and some Velcro sewed to the seam on the hood-works perfectly.

May well give that a go, I think that my hood was poorly fitted, there is a gap where the hood joins the screen, a tad drafty at high speeds and googles required if raining. Cut a piece of underlay to size to see if it would help, big difference, not good for wet driving tho as it will hold water like a sponge.

There should be no gap where the hood joins the screen and water should not come through as the underside of the header rail should have a foam pad on that crushes down when you tighten the wing bolts giving a tight seal.

If there is a gap your at risk of the wind getting under and blowing the hood back, twisting the frame.

Fitted properly the only real wind noise you get is from the corners under the header at the top of the quarterlight as it does leave a small gap, but it doesn't rain in from there given the overhang.

There is a thread on hood fitting with images and solutions to some issues from other members: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... 27&start=0

My hood is a good fit but does rattle slightly when i'n going over 40 mph and gets worse if the quarterlites are open or the windows are slightly open or all the way down, i think its just one of those things with soft tops as some modern cars "flap and rattle" to some extent :D
