noisey van exhausts

Post by vanboy »

hi,my new van had this old rotten exhaust on it and i was sure the baffles in the box must have rotted away ,it was so noisey,so i purchased a nice shiney stainless one,now it may be me getting old but its just as bad, when i was 17 running around in my 105e with peco exhaust i liked noise but now im in my smoking jacket and slippers i like smooth and quite,i was thinking of putting a extra box in the straight section in the middle, anyone know a ideal box?

the stainless sytems are often complained about due to being louder than standard.
I would guess an extra box wuld help - might be an idea to look through practical classics etc.. to see if there are any specialist exhaust places advertised - I wouldn't expect a decent stainless additional silencer from the well known tyre/exhaust centres as it is not common enough.

i came across many steel pipes with the baffle not fitted in the box, when manufactured. i thought it was to do with saving on production cost. not so sure about stainless ones though. you could try and push a wire down there a try to feel the baffle.

I think they are straight through systems, ie baffles/mesh around the pipe.

Probably due to the shorter side exit exhaust.

noise

Post by Willie »

I find the standard exhaust system too noisy on all Minors and,
stainless steel are usually even worse. I experimented by
adding the mild steel silencer from the old system into my new
one and found it made a considerable improvement. It didn't
last long though so I resorted to having a special stainless one
made up to my specifications. Works a treat but the special
silencer cost as much as the whole stainless system, but,as it is
stainless I don't expect to ever have to replace it.( It is a straight-
through type to avoid excessive back pressure).
