Any localish service to S W London that can clean all the old oil . rust . etc of my normal 1966 steel wheels.

If they are stripped and blasted back to metal should I prime undercoat and spray or put them in for stove enameling ?

I like mine finished one set in Silver and One in Chryslar Artic White ( looks a better white than any of the BMC whites )

Also tyre removal , Ok to try it at home - tyre levers etc.

Get them powder coated, they look swell and don't rust.

Powder coat if you can afford it, or if cash is tight and the wheels cleaned to bare metal, then spray the rims with a couple of coats of etch primer followed by a few coats of cellulose old english white.

Possibly not much use to you down there. But there's a company in the centre of Birmingham that has done wheels for me. £20 a wheel if you take them in without tyres. Then they strip, make small repairs if necessary, powder coat and laquer.

Aerocoat are good and you could courier the wheels up. Without the tyres the rims aren't that heavy.

Yes , I probably could mail wheels for about a fiver a pair. Cleaning them at home for painting is difficult around the rivet joints and at £20 each is probably cheaper than the time it would take me to do one !

Thanks for all the suggestions , will note and make a start when I have got the old wornout crossplys off the wheels under the car ( only had them for 30 years lying in the garage.

I am quite fond of Hammerite,(made in England), they make a light cream smooth finish paint.
I applied it with a brush on top of a bit of emerying and plain old grey primer.
Cheap as chips but a nice finish for not too much effort, also not expensive.
Also regardless of the money spent, when fitting or removing chrome hub caps, I tend to chip small amounts off,which is frustrating if the owner has spent lots on the paint job.

Hammerite is the work of the Devil....... Nothing wrong with Dulux Exterior Gloss for the job. Mix 50/50 while and magnolia to get Old English White. Powder coating will crack/flake off at the wheel nuts - and where tyre levers are used. Much over-rated process.....

Ah but I am backing Britain here BMC, they are building a whopping great new factory here in the North East just to provide moggie owners with the best quality paint available.
In addition to which I have used Hammerite since I was a young lad on boats trains and planes and wrought iron gates and found it rather splendid stuff,its also made in a very environmentally efficient manner.
I can therefore fully understand the devil wishing to be associated with it, but as it is made in Gods country a conflict may arise

I've wire brushed/sanded them, primed and sprayed with Halfords enamel (for white/cream goods/radiators).Large can Does the job (5 wheels) and so far has lasted through 3 winters without chipping.

Exactly - anything more is a major waste of money!

I can second the gloss paint DIY approach. Just done mine and they look great.

Did several coats with increasing amounts of thinners to get an (almost) glassy finish. Use a good brush and the paint goes on beautifully.
