New Wiring Loom and keeping it clean

I've just bought a nice shiny new wiring loom its cloth covered and i wanted to keep it looking in good condition, i thought about using scotchguard or some other silicone based waterproofer to help keep the grease and grime from penetrating the cloth and ultimately making it easier to clean, i have did the tour of messageboards but didn't find a definative best product, i have read that the american concours boys use a laquer or varnish , but i reckon that will crack / flake or peel, someone else suggested clear silicone sealant wiped on very thin so that it gives a really thin transparent skin covering ,and that is the method that seemed worthy of a try so here are a couple of pics to horrify you

i rubbed it into the cloth covering wearing rubber gloves making sure it went well into the fibres but made sure it wasnt too thick, it dried with a transparent semi shiny finish, feels like rubberised canvas, the adhesion is very good when fully cured and does not rub off even when pulling grommets on i spilled some oil and dusty dirt on and wiped it off with a soapy songe with no residue or staining left , hopefully it will keep the loom looking clean and make cleaning easy for a good few years, a bit of a guinea pig move , happy to hear comments

Going along the silicon route, something that might be worth trying is paving seal or brick seal. I use it on tents in place of tent waterproofer and have found that the water-based stuff dries without leaving any change in colour on canvas tents and nylon tents.

that was one of the suggestions on the american mg site , someone had found it worked quite well but thought it might need reapplying after a couple of years knowing the gaps in the morris i thought its more likely to need something a bit heavier, it feels really weird to the touch but does the job and doesn't look too bad either , ok its not going to be for the concours boys but the mileage i intend to do i'd rather have it easy to clean and looking o.k and not have to worry about it once its done
