Is there any way of or are there any external identifying marks that enable you to tell the difference between a 1098cc engine and a 1275cc engine just by looking at it when removed from the car but not disassembled ?

The 1098 will have 1100 or similar cast onto the engine block on the side where the exhaust manifold fits.

The 1275 may have the oil filter high up on the block on the same side as the dizzy.

Post up a few pics or an engine number and someone will be able to tell you for sure.

The 1098 has removable tappet chest covers on the side of the block, the 1275 has a solid block. Engine nos. start 10 for 1098 and 12 for 1275

12A 497 is not an engine number....... They are very different engines.......as above - tappet chest covers are the obvious first difference.

Ooops, my mistake, probably 12H497, and there are inspection plates on the side of the block.

Removable covers on the side mean it's not a 1275.

A little further down from those covers there will be a large plate with 1100 (inch high digits) if it's a 1098, or 950 cast into the side of the block in the same area (again in inch high digits) if it's a 948.

Well I've learnt a lot but I think this thread can be closed now. Nerys's engine is a 1098, the number cast on the side of the block under the inspection plates is 12A497, there is another mark on the bottom left on the same side "CL9EO", no more marks and it doesn't have and never did have an engine number plate riveted to the top of the block. I rebuilt the engine about 20 years ago and for reasons I can't remember I bought a brand new block and set of pistons and rings rather re-bore the old one, there was no engine number plate on the block when it arrived which was why I never updated the V5C. I was beginning to wonder whether I had unwittingly bought a 1275 block because she goes so well, cruises at an indicated 80mph, true speed 75/6mph and that's on part throttle!

BLIMEY, is she very noisy at that speed then?

My 1275 won't cruise at that speed!
