I've just been to look at a Moggie thats not been looked at in a very long time. It has a stuck/siezed lifting pin on the carb, I've given it some WD40 and a tap with a hammer, it has moved upwards,but is now stuck up. Can I pull it back down without causing damage, or should I look at replacing the carb?

If you do cause damage , you can still replace the carb . The function of the pin is to lift the piston inside the bell shaped chamber . If it was mine I would remove the piston damper ( the black plastic ' nut ' ) & try to push the piston down against the stuck pin . Re tap the pin up & repeat this , it may free off . You can also probably pull it down with pliers & try to rotate it .

It might be easier to remove the dash pot (3 screws) then you can lubricate and tap the top of the pin itself.
Mark the dash pot so you can put it back in the same place.

YES - please do as ^^^^ suggests... DO NOT attempt to tap the piston down through the damper hole.... - that will be the death of it!

Roy , I did not suggest tapping the piston . Also I did not suggest removing the daspot because that then involves removing the piston and spring to access the top of the lift pin . I do not know how mechanically able the OP is but I do know that the needle is vulnerable to damage both on removal and reassembly .

Well I changed the carbs over! I will have a look at the one with the stuck pin some point soon, as I have a couple of fuel pumps to look at as well. I have got the car running again with the replacement carb on it and will run it for a few days and check its state of Tune,but it seems OK just now. Changing the carb over was easier than I expected, and is another job I would be happy to tackle again

Would be a good idea to take the dash pot off and remove the piston (don't bend the needle!) and carefully clean inside the carb, piston and inside the dashpot, use carb cleaner and a tooth brush. Your problem may just be dirt.
