Hi guys,

here today, the rain is relentless. My Minor was at the garage having some work done, and was left outside, dont know for how long.

Anyway, driving on the way home, water was trickling in through the rear two windows (2 door). AHHHHH! I only had both rubber seals replaced a couple of weeks ago!

Is this normal that a Minor still lets water in, even with new seals? After all, the rain has been relentless, and hasnt stopped all day.

Any thoughts?

They can still leak if the seals are a bit loose around the metal work and glass. I used glazing silicone sealant down the joins to try and block off any loose fitting areas.

NO it is not normal, and not correct. As you "had" the seals replaced, take it back to where the work was done. When set up correctly, the Minor should be completely free from leaks. Leaks left untended will only increase corrosion and cause problems later.

I bought the seals from ESM. Had the work done at a local garage. Who would be at fault then?

Should you decide battling with the seal supplier and fitters aint worth it, I eventually used "captain tollys creeping crack cure" on mine and it worked very well indeed.
The water may however, still get under the seal, but it wont get in the car.
You will find stockists on the internet.

Cant really be the fitters problem, as the rubber seals only fit one way. There aint much to get wrong. So problem must be with supplier.
Probably because seals are made cheaper than they used to be etc.
So if I use aqaurium sealent of some sort, should I seal the bottom of the rubber outside and inside?

I sealed mine on the out side of the car in two places.

1) I stuck the end of the sealant nozzle up into the seal where it connects to the body work and went around the window. I let the the seal drop and settle and ooze out the sealant. I then used a wrag and wiped it clean.

2) I put the sealant nozzle into the seal where it touches the glass and ran sealant around the window. Again after seal had settled I cleaned up any sealant that oozed out.

You don't need to squeeze a lot of sealant in, just enough to improve and create the seal that the rubber seal was designed to do in the first place.

Thanks for the answers! I wished I just kept the original rubbers seals in, and just used sealent. Buying news ones, and paying to get them fitted appears to have been a waste of time and money

No worries, this is why I've never bothered to try and renew my leaking front windscreen seal. I've done the others, just not that one.

With the Captain Tolleys creeping crack cure (I just like typing it ) I simply got to the top of the seal and squeezed some in, it runs like water till it hardens but as I said worked very well indeed for me.

I had this problem with esm supplied rubbers too (about 3 years ago). When I phoned them to point out that I thought the rubbers had too big a gap for the glass to go in, they said they hadn't had any problems reported
I ended up using proper car window sealant and haven't had a problem, but I did consider that with new rubbers I wouldn't have had to use sealant.
Sadly this problem seems endemic with remanufactured components. I'm not looking forward to fitting all new rubbers to my lowlight in the near future for this very reason.
