Front Bumper Problem

Hi everyone,

I must start by saying that I'm having a bad day.

About 4 months ago I had bought some new panels to replace ones that had perrished. My mate told me that he could get them powder coated for me for very little cost at his garage. I thought this was a great idea. One of the panels was the one that the grill sits in so we took it over to his work and removed the grill. He said he could probably improve the front bumper too so we also took that off.

I will never get a friend to do a favour like that ever again. I have waited months to get the parts back. Finally got them today only to find that the bugger's lost various bits. It's been that long now I'm not even entirely sure where they go or how they are connected but I think I'm missing some nuts and washer type fixings.

Firstly, I've got the full front bumper assembly but not the nuts to connect it to the studs. Can someone tell me what I'm looking for to connect onto this part ...

[frame]Image[/frame]

The only thing he gave me back with this was one of these ...

[frame]Image[/frame]

I'm not even sure if this is part of the bumper. If it is, is there anywhere I can buy these bits? I've checked the usual online shops but I'm not sure what to order. I think the thread on the stud is 7/16's. Can anyone confirm and, if so, do I only need to buy a couple of 7/16 nuts or is there something else required.

Lastly, the grill panel's not connected at the top and he appears to have lost whatever it was that connected it on. As seen in this picture ...

[frame]Image[/frame]

I can see that there are 2 holes here. Can I just buy a couple of nuts and bolts to secure this together or do you know if there was something else used here and where I can get it?

As I said. Not the best of days. Think I'd just pay the full price in future.

Oh yeah, he lost these bits too but I found them on Ebay ...

[frame]Image[/frame]

If anyone knows where I can get what I need or has them to sell or just wants to send me a cheery word to cheer me up :D I'd be most grateful.

Thanks
Paul.

I know this sounds a bit daft but what am I asking for? I can't seem to find anything on their online shops.

Could be useful, at least you know what goes where when you get the bits ;)

That looks brilliant thanks. I can work out from that exactly what I need.

Just need to figure out what I need for the top of the grill panel and I'm laughing.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

2nd for the Moss website - MUCH clearer diagrams of the parts, and with various depots around the country - you may be able to collect the parts and save on carriage costs.

I think they will just be 7/16 bolts? I am sure someone knows...

They are 7/16" BSF and you need 2 each side. You could just go to your local Engineers merchants and purchase some if you have one in your locality. If not go to B+Q and buy some 8mm*20mm BZP bolts, nuts and washers.

I managed to place an order on Moss for all the bits and bobs that I needed.

The only thing was that they said they are unable to get the parts ...

WASHER, cup, to mounting stud
WASHER, plain, large

shown on the diagram below as 10 and 11 ...

[frame]Image[/frame]

Do you know if these are absolutely necessary and, if so, anywhere or anyone that will sell them?

Thanks again everyone. I'm happy again. I'll be getting my bumper back on soon

The end is in sight.

Well you've already got one cup!

All they do is act as a cover. They're not really critical, and i'm not sure if they're available new, but some suppliers might have 2nd hand ones knocking about.

Cheers. Yeah I thought that was one of them. Shame he didn't manage to hold onto the two of them.

Oh well. I'll just put the one I've got on and forget all about it then  .

I might get auld Mick out for a spin yet before this glorious summer ends :D .

Put a request in the Wanted section someone may have a couple spare. Try ringing Tom Roy as they often have second hand spares (details in Minor Matters or just Google)

Maybe this is a silly question. I thought that the mounting bar (Number 1) goes onto the stud. Then the Bracket Overrider Support (Number 14) goes onto the stud Then the Washer (11), spring washer (12) then the nut (13) and all tightened up. Is that incorrect?

I got all my bits and bobs today and attempted to fit it. There's not a chance I'll get a nut on with all those washers. In fact I can barely get the nut on without the washers. Wee bit concerning that I cant tighten the nut fully over the stud. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks
Paul.

Looking at your original picture - I did wonder if the mounting stud had not snapped off......

Is it likely that he snapped them when he removed the bumper? Suddenly seeming very coincidental that he lost the bumper nuts. He'd probably not want me to see them as i'd see the end of the bolt inside them.

I'm scared to ask but what are my options now and how expensive?
I've just about run out of cash so I have my doubts it'll be getting done anytime soon. :x

The mounting stud has definately sheared off. If you don't have enough thread available to hold the nut on various options are explained here: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... mper+mount but the best thing to do is get a replacement front bumper mounting. Try asking in the wanted section here or ring round some of the suppliers such as Tom Roy, ESM to see if they have a secondhand one available.

Is there not enough to get it back on without washers etc - just bar + nuts. ? Otherwise - indeed, read the old thread........
Learning point - powder coating is a much over-rated pastime.............
