Hi everyone , Iv just put a new LCB exhaust system and a HIF 38 Carb on a metro manifold on to my moggie. All set up as instructed in the link below.
http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=42808
On turning the engine over with a little choke out it doesn't fire up at all

. When it has my other standard carb on it stared 1st time. I havn't messed with the timing or touched anything. I took the plugs out and there is no sign of petrol on them, but i know that fuel is entering the carb. Chat shall i check of do, In very basic terms please. If i could get it running at least i could get it to a garage to have a look.
All advice as always welcome.
Many thanks
Alan

Have you tried full choke?

Almost certainly the LCB is fouling the inlet manifold - and holding it away from the head and/or different thickness of flanges so the inlet is not firmly held to the head - so huge amounts of air are bring sucked in......... Check it out! If that's ok - then all the usual stuff - hoses on correct pipes/servo tapping not lying open/spark plug leads on correct plugs/pour some petrol down the carb - and crank it!

There was a difference in thicknesses between the LCB and the Metro Manifold so i knocked up some spacers out of a strip of ally i had knocking about to tighten them up on. Or would i be better off removing the manifold and grinding it down to the same thickness of the LCB . ???? .
Will Check again and report back.
Many Thanks
Alan

Either way works - provided the spacers don't fall out...... The better job really is to either file down the thick flange - or build up the thin one...... If you think it is all firm/tight - then try pouring in some petrol and see if it will start....if not - look to see if the petrol is running down from the manifold/head connection.........

Ah right -there is hope then! Are you SURE there is a petrol supply to the carb - connected to the correct pipe on the carb ? Do you hear the pump clicking for a few seconds when you switch on? Is the carb piston free to rise and fall ??

I put the petrol to the inlet as per the link above, Should i change them round to the one that thats next to it. I dont hear any clicking as I have a mechanical fuel pump on the engine. ( it was like that when i got it.) Piston moves up and down freely.
Will swop over pipes tomorrow.
Cheers

I'm pretty sure #5 is fuel IN. Test the pump by putting the delivery pipe in a bottle - and cranking the engine over to see if any petrol appears!

It might be worth checking the float isn't jammed- preventing any fuel from getting beyond the float chamber. Simple enough to check (though better done with the carb off the car)- just undo the 4 screws on the bottom of the carb and remove the base plate and float assembly carefully to check everything is moving as it should be.

Hi i swoped the fuel lines over from the fuel inlet as shown in the diagram to the one next to it. ( 5 to 6 ). The engine started but reved uncontrolabily and petrol was pumped all over the engine bay. so thats not wright. When it stops raining im going to put the fuel inlet to no 5, as for no 4 do i leave this as is or connect a pipe to it so any overflow will be taken out below the engine on the floor ? also do i connect no 3 to the breather at the top of the rocker cover or the pipe that comes out of the side of the engine and block. I am going to block off no 6 & 1. No 2 is connected to vacume pump.
Thank you for all your input so far.

4 is an overflow. I would block 6 and 1, at this stage anyway. maybe later try joining them with a rubber tube. #2 to a vacuum pump ????? #2 should be connected to the dizzy...........

Just to clarifi.
attach fuel to inlet no5 . block off 1 & 6 , dont connect anything to 4 as its an overflow , conect breather to pipe on rocker and the vacume advance pipe from the mushroom headed thing next to the dizzy on to the little nipple thing on top next to the flange. I have already tried the above exept i connected the breather to the pipe that comes out of the side of the engine and i had connected 1 & 6 with tubing but it didnt work , so Ill try the new configeration over the weekend and will report back.
thanks again for help and i hope this info is helpful to you as well Welshrat. Bendigedig

If you are taking the base plate off, worth checking the jet tube is not corroded and stuck in situ. You wont be able to adjust the mixture otherwise.

Me again and Im loosing all hope

. Iv connected the carb up again , blocked off 1 & 6 left the overflow open with no pipes on it and connected the breather to the rocker and connected the vacuum advance. and it still wont fire up. Getting a spark at the dizzy.
Iv checked the float and the little valve and they move freely and Iv blown down every tube to make sure they are all clear. I think the needle may be a little worn as its there is quite a gap around it where it screws in the the plunger ( or what ever it is) and it wobbles around .
Fuel is getting in to the float chamber as it came out of the overflow when i disconnected it to check the rest of it over. Iv tried putting fuel in to the air filter side and it fires up but stops when the fuel is spent. I'm sure its something straightforward but as I don't know what I'm looking at it could be staring me in the face and I wouldn't Know.
The tag on the carb says FZX 1414 if thats of any use ???
I haven't touched any timing or removed any plugs it is as was when it use to run with my old 11/4 carb.
I have a show this weekend so really want to get it running so i can attend.
Many thanks
Alan

Thanx.
