I'd like some info/confirmation on the internal linking of the lighting switch contacts please. Looking in the manual the switch is illustrated as having 8 contacts. contacts 1-3-5 and 7 appear to be internally linked together, am I right?

The function of the light switch depends on which wire is connected to which terminal. It can be off/on/on, on/off/on etc. For normal lighting you want off/on/on therefore brown/blue from control box goes to T4, red/green to side lights to T1 and blue to dipswitch to T8. The line on the diagram is the wire crossing over 07,05,03 to 01. The diagram would have been clearer if the wire had been shown alongside the switch with a rt < to 01

To be a little clearer, I want to connect another wire to contact 1 to add some illumination to cigarette lighter socket but do not want to use a piggyback spade to achieve this, I have found connecting this other wire to contact 7 Illuminates the lighter when side and headlights are on. I have concluded that contact 1 & 7 are joined?

A piggy back connector is the obvious method or connect to any red lighting wire or to the panel light switch.
Light switches are too expensive to take apart to see how they work

There are many ways to use that switch. Mine is set to bring on the headlights + sidelights on the first move , and then just the sidelights on the second move. This allows me to 'flash' the headlights easily.
